Thanks. Nice article. Throws out a lot of stats that are interesting but most are meaningless.

Debate his scouting ability if you wish but Studwell was a great player (one of my all time favorites) and I still love Studwell.

That is a fun article to read ... but kind of odd. I am wondering where the grades come from. Really grading by how well that "scout a conference" is silly. I mean, if AD had played at West Virginia instead of Oklahoma all of sudden his Big East grade would be an A and his Big 12 grade a C- or something.

A fun revisiting of past picks none-the-less.

Yes, there were some interesting items in that article. Agree that his grading is pretty silly, he doesn't give picks credit unless they end up being franchise players.

The two things I took away from it were: 1) We don't do well at scouting talent from small schools and 2) contrary to what many posters keep stating, we have had quite a few late round picks in the last 5 years that have been valuable contributors.

    Solid value:
Edwards & Robison in the 4th
Guion & Sullivan in the 5th

Mostly potential at this point, but look like good picks for where they were taken:
While guys like Everson Griffen (4th), Christian Ballard (4th), Joe Webb (6th) have all made solid contributions.

Even guys like Sanford (7th), Brinkley (5th), and Raymond (6th) have seen significant playing time showing value for the pick.

There are a lot of duds in that list for sure, as I would suspect to be the case for any team. I would think that expectations for anyone in rounds 4 and later should be looked at primarily as depth or developmental players. Just staying on the roster for multiple years probably makes those picks valuable in my mind. Hell of a lot cheaper than FA's.

I also think that you would see those same picks thrive much better within different organizations begging the question of how much is it the player vs the coaching and system they get put in.

You mistake guys playing for us for guys that should be playing. Most of the guys you listed should be back ups

What an interesting read. I kindof find it interesting that the scouts would get the blame/or credit for draft successes or failures.

At least for me, it really comes down to how the players are ranked once found and then how they come off the board. This really falls to the GM and not the scouts.

I can't remember the exact specifics but based on a thread a did a year or so ago, I believe we have had something like 40 picks over the period covered by the author.

If you look at how many picks haven't panned out......

    Chris DeGeare
    John David Booty
    Brandon Burton
    D'Aundre Reed

    Rufus Alexander (ACL)
    Greg Blue
    Marcus McCauley
    Aundrae Allison
    Chandler Williams

.....9 counting Rufus and the knee......that is a pretty good average with respect to how well this staff does drafting versus how the rest of the league does.

    On a side note......
Sullivan (6.21, 2008, C, Notre Dame) has developed into a franchise center
Haven't been on much lately, is the general feeling on the site that he is still a piece of crap? ........snicker......
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg
