Umm... you realize they're talking to the people about to draft them? GM's will call them and say "hey, we're thinking of picking you up if you're still on the board when we're up. you game?"
Believe it or not, the draft's purpose is for teams to get players, not for the viewer experience.
How did they do all the negotiations before cell phones i wonder?
The cell phone thing is a non issue to me. It's only a "problem" for the first fifteen guys in the draft who usually know where they are going anyways. There aren't typically a ton of big shockers in the first half of the first round.
I agree, just makes for bad TV.
I doubt anything meaningful ever happens in that last minute phone call.
Also they talk/text on the phone to their agent, family and friends too.
It all seems somewhat rude to me.
The players have no say, they are just pawns.
This is an NFL event. Goodell has done a good job of making the draft a television event, even rolling out the red carpet, and moving it to prime time.
Ever see anyone at the Oscars talking on their cell phone when their name is called?
