Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers' secondary continued to function despite resembling a skeleton crew Monday as the team resumed its voluntary workouts on Clarke Hinkle Field.
Three of the Packers' four projected starting defensive backs - cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson and safety Nick Collins - were absent for the third consecutive day.
Harris and Woodson have not taken part in any of the team's 12 practices in its third and final session of off-season workouts to date, and Collins has missed three consecutive practices and five overall for unspecified reasons.
Filling in at cornerback with the No. 1 defense were Ahmad Carroll, Patrick Dendy and Jerron Wishom, while Marquand Manuel and Mark Roman worked at safety.
Carroll, Dendy and Wishom will all be battling for spots in Green Bay's nickel and dime defenses at training camp, and Manuel and Roman will try to win the starting job opposite Collins.
"Everybody's just learning their role," Manuel said of playing despite the absences. "What to do and where to do it when fall comes. We're just trying to pick it up, get the terminology down pat. I really think that's going to be the key."
Cornerbacks Jason Horton and Mike Hawkins and safety Marviel Underwood were also absent and cornerback Will Blackmon remained out with a broken foot, creating more opportunities for the likes of cornerback Therrian Fontenot and safeties Tra Boger and Tyrone Culver.
Roll call: Quarterback Brett Favre returned to practice Monday and closed the workout with a series of cross-field sprints with fellow signal callers Aaron Rodgers, Ingle Martin, Tom Arth and Brian Wrobel.
Also returning from absences were fullback William Henderson and tight end David Martin. Linebacker Byron Santiago, who had missed the team's 11 previous practices, took part.
Aside from the defensive backs, also missing were wide receiver Greg Jennings, tight end Bubba Franks and defensive tackles Colin Cole, Kenderick Allen and Corey Williams.
Allen was present in the locker room afterward.
Out with injuries but present were running backs Arliss Beach and Najeh Davenport, linebackers Brady Poppinga and Roy Manning, center Chris White, tackles Adrian Klemm and Chad Clifton and wide receivers Rod Gardner and Robert Ferguson.
Re: Three Packer starters absent from secondary
well thats good. hopefully they will keep not showing up to practice and they will have another stellar year. and you know, its not like the defense doesn't need work or anything.
