Re: Would you still take Merling with the 17th pick?

Nope.
I say we take the BPA which may be a corner, safety, or offensive lineman.
We should wait until the middle rounds and draft this guy:

2007: Started all year at left defensive end leading the Big South and ranking third nationally with 24 stops for losses of 115 yards…His 24 stops for losses rank third on the school's season-record list…Led the team and ranked second in the league with six sacks for minus 41 yards…
If he and Robison both started at the ends, we would have the vaunted "Reverse Oreo" front four. ;D
Or the "Brian Williams Brothers."

Who here wouldn't mind still having Lance Johnstone's sack production back again?
So what if Harvey doesn't play full time...the Vikes have plenty of other players that could handle first and second downs.

What the Vikes need are MORE sacks and QB pressures...and it doesn't matter where it comes from...one person or by committee.
Very nice post my friend.
Infact if that is what happens, I would suspect that Spielman will also take another DE in the later rounds to shore up the LDE position.

Its not like we don't have some picks this year to take a few chances on getting it right finally.

;D

(On a side note - I think we got it right last year with Robison at RDE).
I would rather them bundle a few of those extra picks and move up a bit if that would get the Vikes a better player who can fill a true NEED with some one who is also the BPA at that spot.
Wishful thinking, I know...but that is how the better teams position themselves for a run at glory.
BANNED OR DEAD...I'LL TAKE EITHER ONE

im still in support of drafting a K with the 17th pick..he can compete with longwell, lose, and get cut..i think thatd be our best option with our first round pick

Draft Analysis: Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson Tigers

After three seasons with the Clemson Tigers, junior defensive end Phillip Merling has declared himself eligible for the 2008 NFL Draft. A gifted athlete, Merling found himself in the shadow of a future NFL first-round pick and 2007 NFL All-Rookie Team member in defensive end Gaines Adams (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) during his freshman year, and registered 22 tackles and two sacks playing sporadically.....

The problem with Merling is his sack #s.

These do not scream sack artist to me.
Went and checked out his highlight reel and I saw nothing I want with the 27th pick.
He has bust written all over him.

Those were his sack totals?
I didn't know they were that low.

Re: Would you still take Merling with the 17th pick?

If Harvey is gone, I don't think we need to take another DE with injury concerns in the first round.
That hasn't worked for us too well...

I think what is overshadowed with the Udeze situation is that we need a PASS RUSHER more than we need an all around end.
We can stop the run, that isn't the problem.

I keep preaching this and no one wants to listen........ ;D

Thats because he isn't a sack artist/edge rusher who is gonna put up lots of sacks like a Harvey would.

His strength is the flexibility he gives you with respect to play at the LDE as well as the middle.
Heck he can even play RDE but I think you would see production (sacks) like we did with Keneche when he filled in ther out of necessity when Erasmus went down 2 years ago.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg
