Why we shouldn't draft a QB in the 1st...

Just looking back at the past 5 drafts, you'd be surprised to see how well picks in the 2nd and 3rd round turned out compared to 1st rounders.

    2001-

    1st- Michael Vick
2nd-Drew Brees, Quincy Carter, Marquis Tuiasosopo
    3rd- None

    2002-

1st- David Carr, Joey Harrington, Patrick Ramsey
    2nd-None
    3rd- Josh McCown

    2003-

1st- Carson Palmer, Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller, Rex Grossman
    2nd- None
    3rd- Dave Ragone, Chris Simms

    2004-

1st- Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, J.P. Losman
    2nd- None
    3rd- Matt Schaub

    2005-

1st- Alex Smith, Aaron Rodgers, Jason Campbell
    2nd- None
3rd- Charlie Frye, Andrew Walter, David Greene

And keep in mind, most of those guys...Vick, Palmer, Carr, Manning and Smith were all #1 overall picks. These guys are SUPPOSED to be phenomenal, and their contracts reflect that. But, if you look at picks after the top 10, you have mostly light-hitters: Ramsey, Boller, Grossman, Roethlisberger, Losman, Rogers and Campbell. For later picks, only Brees is the proven stud but guys like Schaub, Frye, McCown and Simms are young guys with potential and have shown they can lead teams in an actual game, which is pretty much all that can be said for most of the top picks.
    --------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, take a look at the similar draft history for linebackers...

    2001-

1st- Andre Carter (now plays DE), Dan Morgan

2nd- Kendrell Bell, Tommy Polley, Jamie Winborn, Quinton Caver

3rd- Sedrick Hodge, Torrance Marshall, Eric Westmoreland, Brian Allen, Morlon Greenwood, DeLawrence Grant

    2002-

    1st- Napoleon Harris, Robert Thomas

    2nd- Raonall Smith, Lavar Fisher

3rd- Salim Rasheed, Ben Leber, Will Witherspoon, Rocky Calmus, Will Overstreet, James Allen, Akin Ayodele,

    2003-

    1st- Nick Barnett, Tyler Brayton

2nd- Boss Bailey, E.J. Henderson, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Kawika Mitchell, Eddie Moore, Terry Pierce, Chaun Thompson, Victor Hobson, Alonzo Jackson

3rd- Antwan Peek, Lance Briggs, Gerald Hayes, Cie Grant, Angelo Crowell

    2004-

1st- Jonathan Vilma, D.J. Williams, Jason Babin

2nd- Karlos Dansby, Teddy Lehman, Daryl Smith, Dontarrious Thomas, Courtney Watson

3rd- Gilbert Gardner, Marquis Cooper, Keyaron Fox, Landon Johnson,

    2005-

1st- Demarcus Ware (now plays DE), Shawne Merriman, Derrick Johnson, David Pollack

2nd- Barrett Ruud, Kevin Burnett, Lofa Tatupu, Odell Thurman, Matt McCoy

3rd- Channing Crowder, Kirk Morrison, Alfred Fincher, Daryl Blackstock, LeRoy Hill

The only 'studs' drafted after the first round are Witherspoon, Tatupu, and probably Bell, although Thurman, Dansby, Briggs and Leber are solid, I'll give Crowder and Ayodele a maybe. 7-8 guys, out of about 50 picks could come in and be a solid presence on our team. In the first round though, guys like Barnett, Merriman, Vilma and Morgan are studs and DJ Williams is quite solid as well. Also, hybrid players like Ware and Carter are solid DEs. Out of 13 1st rounders, 7 of those guys could come in and become a solid presence on our team.

In light of this info, it would be wise to take the surer thing, a playmaking LB in the 1st and take our chances on a QB in the 2nd-3rd round who can take the franchise over in 1-2 yrs than taking our chances on a QB in the 1st or trading for Schaub and taking an even bigger chance on picking up our stud LB in the 2nd and 3rd.

The statistics are telling, to say the least.

If I understand what you're saying correctly, and you're saying we should get LB then QB, then I agree. I'd rather take a pretty sure thing at LB than a risk at QB, seeing as how we need both and I think LB a little more.
    WE CAN BUILD ON THIS!!!

    In AP I trust

The more I read the more I am becoming convinced we are gonna give up our first round pick and maybe a 3rd rounder for Schaub.

In a sense, yeah. I'm just trying to justify it through past results and facts rather than pimping ernie sims or greenway because I'm not a scout and I don't know who'll be best, but I'll try to let the facts speak for themselves.

Dude You are so write, we need athletic linebackers for the tampa 2 defence if we dont get athletic linebackers in the draft we will have a terrible defence, and take a 2 season step backwards.

A 1st and 3rd rounder for Schaub?! And what'd we get out of the Culpepper trade - oh yeah ... makes me wish we had a few of those Atlanta guys in charge over here before we rush into another bad trade.
