We lost Smith and Odom....So what....(Peppers)

Don't fret. Peppers is a FA in 2009.
I think we should trade for him now that his stock is low.
Would you give up a 1st and another draft pick for him?
He will be playing with a dominant DT tandam like he did when he had his best years.
Remember that he lost Buckner from that amazing front 4.

hell yah i'd give up our number one, but i wonder what they would be asking for.
he was a number one overall pick.
and he's asking for freeney money or maybe more now but he would be exactly what we need and we wouldnt have to draft a guy and hope he turns out to be a good pass rusher. like what has happened with udeze and james.

No reason why we can't give him what Smith got and the rest of what he wants in performance based bonuses.

Give him 6 years 45 million.
And additional 1 million dollar kick ins tied to the end of the deal for Leading the league in sacks, double digit sacks, etc.

No, I'd rather just wait until he is a FA.
He needs to show that his career is not on the decline now after being injured and not performing at the elite level he used to before we give up a first round pick for him.
It reminds me of the Eagles getting Jevon Kearse right before he couldn't stay on the field. :-

I would not be willing to part with my first rounder and that kind of money for him. He just looks to much in a decline. Almost like he hit a wall (very similar to Kearse which is a very good example). I loved Peppers a couple of years ago, but the last year and a half he just has not been the kind of player who would warrant a first round pick and $45 million.

maybe, but that's a quick decline.
i mean he has not been in the league that long.
look at justin smith, he had only 2 sacks last year but people still think he's young and got game.
thats how i feel about peppers except he's actually better.
of course i know this is all hypothetical, but that's shit they would find out before they pulled a trigger on any deal anyway.

Re: We lost Smith and Odom....So what....

We need a sizeable, quick. and mean DE.

it's the cog we're missing that would dramiticly boost our Pass D.
    Who could it be?

i'd rather take a FA/ Trade for a secure place holder, and then search in the draft for his future replacement.

we have possible gems on the team now, but i really do think a good vet precence there can help their development, as well as solidify us in the begining of the year, and give the 2nd year kids some time to adjust, and join in on the fun .

by the end of the year we'll know which of the 07 rookies is worth holidng there, and IF we need to keep the higher paid FA..

if this doesn't make sence.. it's cause i'm not drinking coffee and trying not to smoke cigs.. and... it's eating @ me!!!!

Re: We lost Smith and Odom....So what....

I still contend that they aren't even looking at RDE at this point and will be happy to go into the season with the RDE's they currently have on the roster if the right guy isn't there in the draft.

My guess is they are currently looking at who is out there that they could bring in that will start or backup Jayme Mitchell at LDE.
If they hold true to form and only bring in a guy that is coming off his first contract the list is pretty small with just these two as possible candidates.

I like Hargrove but think he is a bit on the light side.
Thomas, also is abit light but has the frame to add 10lbs or so.

    Tony Hargrove

    Unrestricted Bills

    6-3 272lbs 4 years 10.5 career sacks
    Josh Thomas

    Unrestricted Colts

    6-5 271lbs 4 years 6 career sacks

Or they could then be looking at a couple of guys coming off thier second contract.

    Marques Douglas

    Unrestricted 49ers

    6-2 293lbs
    7 years 19 career sacks
    Mike Rucker

    Unrestricted Panthers 6-5 270lbs 9 years 55 career sacks

I doubt it that they will look at anybody older as it just doesn't follow with thier youth movement but here are a couple of old vets that could be bought for a year or two.

    Renaldo Wynn

    Unrestricted Saints

    6-3 296lbs 11 years 25 career sacks
    Bobby Hamilton

    Unrestricted Browns

    6-5 285lbs 12 yrs 19 career sacks
    Kimo Von Oelhoffen

    Unrestricted Eagles

    6-4 299lbs 14 years 26 career sacks
    Travis Kirschke

    Unrestricted Steelers

    6-3 298lbs 11 years 11 career sacks

On a side note, although listed as DE's on thier teams rosters, these guys might be a good fit behind Phat Pat.

    Nick Eason

    Unrestricted Steelers
    6-3 305lbs 5 years 2 career sacks
    Rodney Bailey

    Unrestricted Cardinals 6-3 309lbs 7 years 9.5 career sacks
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

I actually woudn't mind seeing Mike Rucker here.
He would be a good stop-gap solution, and also be the veteran presence we need out there while some of our younger guys get better.
