Thread: Wasn't impressed by Newton in BCS Title game

Got to admit, I don't watch much college football. But, given the Vikings plausible need to draft a "franchise" QB in the first round this offseason, I watched bits and pieces of some of the bowl games.

Watched roughly the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the BCS title game to see Cam Newton. Frankly, I wasn't impressed at all. Most of his throws were little dump offs of 10 yards or less, and I suspect a lot of his passing yardage came on yards after the catch. He made a single read, and if that wasn't there, he'd take off running. I didn't see anything that implied he could successfully drop back, stand in the pocket, make multiple reads and find an open receiver. The offensive scheme looked gimmicky at best.

The guy looks like a project to me, certainly not a guy that we could expect to take the opening day snaps in 2011. Frankly, it might take 2 or 3 seasons before this guy looks like an NFL QB. I might take him in the 4th round, but not at #12.

Thoughts?

I dont think Cam boosted his NFL stock last night.. but i do see a team doing what Denver did with Teblow last year and not only taking him in the first but trading up to do so.

110% that team will not be us.

Newton will definitely go in the first round ... and I would not be surprised if he is gone before we pick anyways.

His size and speed with his arm strength simply will be too much for teams to pass up. Somebody will think they can make him a star.

He was playing the # 2 team in the league. and did put up over 245 yards in 1 quarter.

All I know is I do NOT want him in Purple. He had a good performance but not one that shows he can come in and learn the position and be NFL ready in 8 months. I think that he needs to go to a team with a good QB Coach or Coordinator. We have too many other parts to fix along with the QB and Newton is a reach in my opinion.

Frankly I am not overly impressed with any of the QB's this year, aside from Luck who will be at Stanford next season.

I saw him make a handful of great throws throughout the game. He didn't get much help from his receivers though.

He can fit it in a tight window and has a strong arm. But he misses some easy throws, which bothers me. I don't know if it's inconsistent mechanics, or a mental thing.

I like what he brings to the table, he reminds me of Roethlisberger, but a much better athlete.

If he can read an NFL defense, he should be a good player.

And if we are able to snag him id love to take the chance

id consider taking him in the 4th round.. hes to much of a project player. id never spend a 1st round pick on a project.

Don't see what the two have in common besides their race.
Russell is an immobile QB
Young is a mobile QB
Russell is a Bust
Young has a 65% winning record( I believe 4th among active Qbs)
