    Re: vikings sign safety

I like the signing. I don't think that the ACL injury should hinder him too much from being a immediate impact off the bench and a possible starter before the season is out. I know that the injury thing should worry everyone but with the moves that the Vikings have made this off season I'm impressed that they actually did this one.

1 year deal really doesn't say much other than "lets see how ya do" and we will talk long term later.

Doss, Tank Williams, Dwight Smith, Darren Sharper, and Greg Blue.
Someone should be able to stay healthy in this group
    ;D
I wish we could move one or two of those guys to corner. I'm all for Griffin starting but we could certainly use another veteran CB as a nickelback. Our D is good but very young. Which is exciting if it all pans out.
Maybe Blue could become a LB?
good he is... urlacher he is not

at least now theres insurance for all safety positions.
if sharper goes down, smith can play fs, if doss/smith/tank/blue goes down, there are 3 able players to sub in.

if anything this will provide some competition for SS.

perhaps they could trade smith for a reciever or draft pick (4th round sound fair?)

So what he is a hired gun, Deion Sanders was a hired gun for 1 year in SF and they did okay.

I think Mike Doss is a pretty darn good safety. I just think we should have focused our attention elsewhere, all in all we got him at a pretty good price, not a terrible signing but not a great one. Really we cant rate these signings until we see these guys play i suppose.

they do that because he's coming off an injury and don't want to sign him long term if he can't play.
they did the same with tank williams and koren robinson.

I like the signing. Clearly frasier saw something in him while he was with the colts. Plus we got him for cheap because of the injury. We now have 5 starting caliber safeties on the team opening up some huge competition in training camp. I like it.

Who cares how many safeties they sign between now and FINAL cuts.

Its all about competition, the better safety(ies) will win out for spots on the roster, the rest will be jettisoned.

Those guys, if they are any good will be picked up by other teams.

Well, at least this SHOULD put to rest the rumors of the Vikings drafting Laron Landry at #7.

Sharper, Tank Williams, Mike Doss, Greg Blue, D.Smith.
That seems like one too many safeties.
    Adding Landry makes no sense.

Unfortunately, some folks will STILL push to draft Landry because of highlight reels which show big hits by Landry and all the associated agents' hype.
    :

Since Frazier is in, and Tomlin is out, I think this is the end of the line for D.Smith.
Maybe he will end up in Pittsburgh? .... and later this year in a Pittsburgh stairwell?
    :

Sharper will retire in a few years, so it makes sense to keep Blue, as long as he develops.
Tank Williams is not certain to perform well after rehab from his injury last year.
Doss' contract is only one year, so they aren't counting on him for the long term.
So, Doss is a courtesy signing prompted by Frazier's desire to improve the pass defense, at least as a short term solution.

I belive that Landry is a FS not SS and Blue is a SS.

    Doss is officially a Viking!!!

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/footb...notebook_N.htm

Our safety depth should be incredible this season!
Sharper, Smith, Doss, Tank, and Blue should do just fine, even if one or two of them go down, we'd still be okay.

No more need to pick Laron Landry at 7, this gives us more options in the draft instead of safety!
