Vikings sign free agent OT Charlie Johnson

Even on the first day of practice at 2011 Verizon Vikings Training Camp, head coach Leslie Frazier and VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman continue to mold the roster. The Vikings on Monday signed free agent OT Charlie Johnson, who was most recently with the Indianapolis Colts.

Johnson, a product of Oklahoma State, has played in 74 career games with 54 starts, yet he’s just 27 years old. He measures in at 6-4, 305 pounds, giving him the size up front to battle in the run game but also giving him the mobility to handle outside speed rushers in pass protection. And you don’t hang around the Colts for six seasons if you’re not productive and reliable.

Johnson played in 10 playoff games with five starts in Indianapolis, including appearances in two Super Bowls and one Super Bowl start. The Colts won 10+ games every year Johnson played there and Johnson was Manning’s blindside protector for a pair of MVP seasons in 2008 and 2009.

@TomPelissero: I've talked to scouts about Johnson before. Was somewhat miscast at left tackle with #Colts, probably better-suited for long term at guard.

Looks like we have our starting guard! And he's been Peyton's starting LT for 6 seasons. I've lived in Indianapolis my whole life. I've seen this guy play a lot. Definitely will be a better guard than we was a tackle. This is a great move.

Sorry Rick! Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the read/update my friend.

I wonder though, is this guy gonna come in and start or is he a insurance policy if Herrera can't go?

On a side note, anyone see anything about Cook signing his tender?
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

 Please tell me this isn't true. I'm going to be sick. I thought signing Johnson would mean no more Cook.

And as far as the insurance policy, there is no way. He will be the starter for sure at guard. Peyton Manning called him the #1 priority for the Colts this FA. I'm guessing we are paying him a lot.

Sorry Rick! Keep up the good work.

Cook is too versatile to let go. Not great at anything, not really even good at anything, but average at a lot of O-line spots.

This Johnson signing is very good due to the injury situations and age situations on our line. Johnson will likely be a starter I think when the season starts, assuming Herrera is not ready to go.

But depth on the OL is NEVER a bad thing.

I imagine the starting line at this point will be McKinnie, Hutch, Sully, Loadholt and Johnson.

Well, we already have Chris cook on the roster and I have always believed too many Cooks spoil the broth so hopefully he will be sent down the road.

This is the first signing I have seen that looks like it makes sense.

OTOH as I said after the draft, there are going to be OL and DL available during camp as vets get released to make room for some of the talent that has been drafted in the past 2 seasons and hopefully we can find some bargains there.

He is the worst player on the team. I'm praying we won't re-sign him. As for Johnson, he is definitely going to start. He is heads and shoulders better than Herrera. And we will pay him as such. We didn't sign him to be a backup to anyone.

Sorry Rick! Keep up the good work.

Yeah ... I am guessing he is the starter and Herrera will be a versatile backup as well.

If Cook was in fact the worst player on the team (which is tough considering we had Madieu Williams and Tyrell Johnson some last year) then we should have been much better. He was very valuable with lineman injuries last season.

That said ... I would not cry if we let him go.

You might be right. On a side note, you don't think that Cook played well last year (at 3 postitions)?

Is he starting caliber? I don't think so, but he sure provided much needed depth last year and didn't do a bad job doing it either.

Now that we have Charlie Johnson and Anthony Herrera, Cook is totally worthless. He is versatile I guess. But he is below average at everything he does. He is lazy and gets our players killed.

Sorry Rick! Keep up the good work.
