i agree with you a lot on this; look at the good year bennett had when we had a good line. but we do need a rb who can score when were close to the endzone and the only guy we have who can do that is moe williams."vikingstw" wrote:
Good post hovan, i like alexander and all but i dont even want to think about RB untill we do some serious work on the offensive line. We all know how a good or bad oline can alter the play of the other 6 players on offense. Take for example Peyton Manning last week, protection crumbled and he failed horribly. I'd be satisfied with O Smith, Moore and Fason as our backs and go spend the big bucks to put a offensive line together that can bring this offense back to where it needs to be.
Alexander is going to ask for the most money a RB has ever been payed in NFL history, FA is all about overpaying, see big mouth smoot. Now if we take all that money you guys want to pay alexander and we use it on FA offensive lineman we will be much more succesful. Then guys like Mewelde and Onterrio can finally have a kick jiggly butt offensive line. Not to mention our WR's having enough time to get downfield.
Spending that kind of money on a RB is silly, cause good RB are all over the place, there the glory guys when the real reason for there sucess is right in front of them. Just watch the Seahawks run block then imagine Mewelde running behind it, same results. Same goes for Onterrio Smith or a RB we draft.
Yep. Spending a ton of money on a RB is pointless, if you neglect the O-line. While spending a ton of money on the O-line, can do wonders, even if you don't have that stud RB.
I am all for spending our money on the O-line and using a draft pick on a RB. Let the draftee, MM, Fason, and Onterrio battle it out for the starting job.
I would spend big bucks on Hutch or Bentley, get a good LB like Witherspoon, and get a SS like Clark from Washington, then use the draft for a RB and whatever else we need, like a young QB.
I think Onterrio could do the job if he has to and if we do bring him back, however Maroney or White would fit the role perfectly.

Re: Vikings Readying For Free Agency
Onterrio Smith is the best all around RB we have and he's not even on the roster, lol. So i think we need to get him signed back, hopefully he learned his lesson, if not we have great backups. I think the chances of him being suspended again are very very unlikely. He just got football jerked out from under him. Probably the best thing he knows how to do, play football. I believe he learned his lesson so lets get him back in shape and on the field.
The year before last he was on a good pace until his suspension kicked in then things got out of rythme with other RB's jumping in the mix. I could be wrong but its worth a shot to bring him back, we have nothing to loose and his price tag is low.

Re: Vikings Readying For Free Agency
Onterrio would have to come back CHEAP for me to want to see the Vikes hang their hats on him as a potential starter...but even so, I would want to see us look at someone in FA who has proven that he can be a feature back in the NFL...and Edge might be a more affordable option than Shaun when all is said and done.
I doubt that Witherspoon will be available and that Washington will just let Clark go without making him a pretty decent offer.BANNED OR DEAD...I'LL TAKE EITHER ONE

Re: Vikings Readying For Free Agency
Rememeber everyone that Smith is still under contract, his last year on contract didn't count because he didn't play with the suspension. If the Vikes bring him back, they can see how he plays this year, then worry about him next year. I agree we need a better O line more than we need a RB, besides if we bring Smith back, we got our version of Westbrook, he has great hands, awesome explsive style out of the backfield, and can catch and run, I say bring him back, put MM at the backup role, and with Moe Williams most likely retiring, put Fason as 3rd down specialist, and goal line back.
As far as D goes, I know Newman is getting up there, but man he was all over the field for us this year, EJ needs a little more respect, and Dt will be alot better with Tomlin at the helm. I too am very excited with the coaching changes, I think it was the best possible thing that could have happened. Peterson is probably a good assumption, and if this Pep thing goes into reality, we may end up seeing Ray Lewis in Purple and Gold, now that wouldn't hurt my eyes one bit..

Re: Vikings Readying For Free Agency
I am not totally comfortable relying on Smith to be the everydown back...especially if we can put it all together quickly and make a serious run at the playoffs and the Super Bowl. And I do think that we have most of the pieces to do so...including a potentially dominating defense and a coach that knows how to make an offense efficient and productive. All that offense needs is a feature back that can carry the load EVERY week!
As for the OL, we already have our LT and C...we also have multiple candidates to play both G spots...Fonoti, Marcus, Fowler, Goldberg, Liewinski...all we really need is a RT to replace Rosenthal...and drafting Marcus McNeil might be the answer there. I agree that Ray Lewis would be an immense addition to our young defense!BANNED OR DEAD...I'LL TAKE EITHER ONE

Re: Vikings Readying For Free Agency
how about a good fullback? Or why haven't they used one this season? Fason isn't the answer to short yardage. Where was Jimmy K? At one time the raved as one of the best? Let's see struggling line, bad short yardage stats, hmm. Give the ball to JK or let him make a hole.
Otherwise, pick up a FB.
