The Vikings are in discussions with the agent for veteran free-agent offensive lineman Jason Whittle, who was released by the New York Giants in a salary-cap related move last week.
Whittle, who has spent seven of his eight NFL seasons with the Giants, can play center and guard. He appeared in 14 games last season but did not have any starts; he started all 16 games for the Giants the previous year.
Agent Joe Linta said there is interest in Whittle from other teams, and he wants to get the situation resolved in 24 hours.
"We have a couple of other things going with him but one thing I really like is the Vikings hired Pat Morris [as offensive line coach]," Linta said.
•Guard Adam Goldberg will be given the one-year required minimum tender of around $380,000 for the 2006 season by the Vikings.
•The Vikings are expected to place a first-round qualifying offer on receiver Nate Burleson if a deal is not done with the restricted free agent by 3 p.m. today.

I hopes we're just lookin' to improve our backups, and dat we're still gonna go for Bentley....

2005 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Jason Whittle
Grade: 61 | Key
Alert: None
Comment:
He takes good angles to his blocks and plays with good intelligence when helping out on twists and stunts by the defensive front. He is better when he is uncovered. He rarely gets himself in poor position and he shows the ability to slide and reset his feet. This makes it difficult to get movement. He works with a narrow base and has trouble sustaining blocks. He has a tendency to get over extended and fall to the ground. He does a poor job of using his hands to lock on. A good bull rush will overwhelm him and he can not maintain contact with a speed rush or a good double move."From the fury of the Northmen, O Lord, save us!"

Re: Vikings make bid to sign offensive lineman Whittle
Is he an upgrade over Withrow or Fowler? If not, I would rather sign starters than backups! We should wait until we know who is going to be cut by other teams.
BANNED OR DEAD...I'LL TAKE EITHER ONE

It's like getting a dodge when you're expecting a mercedes (or a bentley!!) This imo wouldnt be something that we should spend money on, we have solid backups, they're called our starters from last season (ok ok, not all of them) Lets get a Bentley!!

Re: Vikings make bid to sign offensive lineman Whittle
Childress knows what hes doing. Hes adding proven vetern depth to the roster. I'm sure they dont think this guy is a god. But with your offensive and defensive line being two huge roles, it dosnt hurt to have solid depth.Last time I checked the giants have had a solid running game for years, so I'm sure hes atleast decent.

Theres NOTHING greater then a Florida Gator!
