Re: Vikings initiate trade talks for Bryant McKinnie
This is NOT good news.
I agree that he has become a pain in the ass. But it would have been much better for him to show up in shape and at least be a solid tackle if not a very good one.
We have NOBODY to put on that side of the line. All indications are that Johnson and Loadholt will be the guys now, but I do not think either one of them would be expected to play LOT.
This is very sad. A guy with his size and his remarkable talent wasting it away. He could have been a key ingredient to a resurgent run game and a winning Vikings season this year.
Such a shame.

Re: Vikings initiate trade talks for Bryant McKinnie
This should be interesting. In recent years there have been posters clamouring to proclaim him as an elite LT, so in that case teams should be falling over themselves to snap up such a quality player..

and JA will be licking his lips at that matchup, in fact he'll probably run out of nickels paying to go through that turnstile.

I agree. He has been a PITA but he is still better than anyone who we will replace him with.

It is beginning to look like history is going to repeat itself.

Well not overpaying for players and letting players go is very different.

This is part of a process under a new coach though. It is a shame that the lockout happened. We would have likely cut his fat ass a long, long time ago and had a lot more time to find someone and adjust. Our draft would have likely been different, etc.
But a new coach has to get rid of people that cannot do the job he wants them to do, or that he feels will just be a headache. So, it appears that McKinnie will be hitting the door.

Re: Vikings initiate trade talks for Bryant McKinnie
It looks like Charlie Johnson will be his replacement. Not great but he did pretty well protecting Manning over the years. He's an offensive lineman Ray Edwards. A solid player but nothing special. Difference is he doesn't have the mouth or attitude.

Re: Vikings initiate trade talks for Bryant McKinnie
This Charlie Johnson guy has started for two years at left tackle for the Colts and was a starter at various spots on the line two years before that. He doesn't have the potential of a McKinnie (mostly unrealized), but I would not say he is a questionable talent. I expect he will perform better than McKinnie last year, though I would rather have had McKinnie return to top form and Johnson help elsewhere on the line.

The team is kind of up against the cap this year with it actually going down from two years ago, but they're still being aggressive in acquiring a solid veteran quarterback and bringing in some other pieces. Yeah, Rice is gone and there are some moves the team didn't make, but I don't think they're in a mode where they are going to shut it down and try to save money. When the age of the Vikings came to a close, they must have sensed it. Probably, they gathered together one evening, slapped each other on the back and said, "Hey, good job." - Jack Handey [Deep Thoughts]

It does appear to be the case at this point.
