    Vikings Free Agents In 2011

Vikings' Pat Williams: 'They're going to be rebuilding around here'

The Vikings are coming of one of the worst seasons in many years, they will need to sign some new coaches (or at least promote a couple) and probably need to replace some aging veterans. But the biggest problem this off-season is all the players with expired contracts. Of course, this might not be a problem at all. All the players COULD sign a 5 year deal at a reasonable price... but deep inside we all know that's not gonna happen.

List of Vikings players with expiring contracts in 2010
    (not including practice squad players)

    In order of most valuable:

    Linebacker ---------- Chad Greenway 1
Wide Receiver ----- Sidney Rice 2
    Defensive End ----- Ray Edwards
Defensive End ----- Brian Robison 3
    Quarterback -------- Tarvaris Jackson
    Safety ---------------- Husain Abdullah 7
    Linebacker --------- Ben Leber 5
Place Kicker ------- Ryan Longwell 4
    Offensive Line ----- Ryan Cook
Defensive Tackle - Fred Evans 8
Linebacker --------- Erin Henderson (only restricted free agent) 9
Defensive Tackle - Pat Williams 6
    Quarterback -------- Brett Favre
    Fullback ------------- Naufahu Tahi
    Cornerback -------- Frank Walker
    Cornerback -------- Lito Shepperd
    Safety ---------------- Eric Frampton
    Wide Receiver ---- Greg Lewis

Source: There are many different sources, but I found WalterFootball the most reliable.
I highlighted the guys in blue that should be kept and the number explains the order in which we need to keep them.

Pat Williams will be back if he's not retiring. He won't play anywhere else besides Minnesota.

We MUST MUST MUST keep Chad Greenway around. Give him big money. He can't get away.

If Sidney can stay healthy, he's a vital part of this offense. He's a big play WR who will be a star for us.

Robison is better than Edwards, and Ray wants big money. Let him walk and sign BR to a 3-4 year deal.

Longwell is terrible on kickoffs. Terrible. But his FG percentage and reliability cannot be denied. Keep Longwell and find a kickoff specialist who can get the ball in the endzone.

Abdullah is young and has upside to be a good safety.

Fred Evans, Letroy Guion, and Jimmy Kennedy have played behind two of the top DT's in the game. They've learned a lot and have a ton of talent. I don't think we can let him go.

If the Vikings do not attempt the long field goals, shouldn't Longwell have a better field goal percentage? Yeah, he is good on short kicks, but what if the Vikings need a 50+ yard game winner in the playoffs?

The Vikings cannot continue to spot 10-20 yards on kickoffs to other team in the NFL. They need a better kick off and better coverage.

Greenway is a duh. The kid only missed having 100 tackles four seasons in a row by 1 tackle last year. This year he led the NFC in tackles with 144. Thats a whole lot of consistently being around the ball.

Rice is awesome when healthy (gotta love how he plucks the ball out of the air while out jumping defenders!), but has been healthy only once in his four year career. IF he gets a big contract, you're going to want some insurance worded in there somewhere...perhaps in the form of season ending roster bonuses...?

Sure, it'd be nice to keep Ray and Robison, but that doesn't seem likely. I can easily see Ray's self worth not matching the team's figures given he gets to play with so much other talent. Somebody somewhere isn't getting resigned, and guessing Ray is one of them, so I hope we keep BR. He plays tough and will probably take a lower contract than RE.

I like Longwell's FG reliability, and feel our coverage was lacking this year due partially to injuries to CBs etc...gambling on a new kicker doesn't make a whole lot of sense when Longwell likely won't cost that much.

I could see keeping Pat around if the price is right and his reps remain limited. Could happen. Depth at DL is key to keeping fresh legs rushing the passer!

Abdullah is like Pat and Robison, positive potential that could likely be had at a good rate of pay. Of course, having 2 CBs on IR and a third injured too doesn't help, but I'd sure like to see some new talent/depth added to our secondary!

Favre if finished and all I can say is, "good luck getting a job Jackson." So, IMHO, we need to sign a vet QB who has enough talent to start for a year or two while we develop Webb AND another draft choice. Even with the NFL's zealous attempt to protect their big money offensive players, bigger-faster-stronger players are leading to more and more injuries...I want 3 QBs with potential enough to manage the game on our roster.

I'm not too worried about the rest of the depth guys cuz I'm hoping for top end talent added to OL and we can likely keep our choice of the others at reasonable rates.

SKOL VIKINGS!!!!!! Its going to be an interesting offseason! Hopefully, starting with a new offensive scheme, and specially after last year's full returning starters!!

Chad is the first guy resigned, then we say bye to some fan favorite's like Big Pat, Ray Edwards, Tarvaris Jackson, even possibly Sidney. I like Sydney Rice as much as anybody here, but he just cannot stay on the field.I Then after Chad we need to resign Brian Robison, H. Abdullah, F. Evans, Erin Henderson, and weather we want them or not N. Tahi, E. Frampton, G Lewis.
Being the 12th pick in the draft, and lacking a third round pick we may have some more surprises instore this offseason.

I'd like to point out that once the CBA expires, there will be no signings. So, IF the Vikings wanted to re-sign someone, they should have done it before the current season ended. Now that the regular season has concluded, there's zero chance that any of these FAs are re-signed by the Vikings (or that any other team re-signs any of their FAs) as all will want to see how the new CBA works out.

    =Z=

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

wow tad.. i think this is the first post ever that im actually going to be agreeing with you.. chad, sid and abdullah we need back.. abdullah we can sign for cheap, and hes good, getting better every game and is making plays.

on a side note, lets say all the qbs we want are off the board.. and when our pick comes up, what do you guys think of picking a CB like Prince or if somehow Peterson is available picking him up, and moving Antoine to Safety?

I would pick wither of those two over any QB in the draft.

I have a feeling the both of them could be gone in the top five if not ten. Guys with the size, speed, and strength to dominate in coverage are pretty rare. But, every year, there are several Big Boys who seem to launch up the boards because 300+ lb athletic freaks are even more rare. Maybe, one will be there. I wouldn't mind getting more top shelf depth in our secondary at all...being able to eliminate the other team's best reciever can be pretty freaking nice! And very frustrating for the other team's QB!

I think you are right and Luck not coming out is going to change the dynamics of the first 10 picks. One way or the other we should be able to get a really good player at a position we need to improve so hopefully we at least get that done. Just taking a CB or QB at that spot if there isn't one worth the slot price would be a bad move.
