    Vikings Free Agents In 2011

One consensus around here is that the Minnesota Vikings will be facing a major rebuilding in 2011. Not only the fans, but also the Vikings players seem convinced that the Vikings will be facing a turbulent year...

Vikings' Pat Williams: 'They're going to be rebuilding around here'

The Vikings are coming of one of the worst seasons in many years, they will need to sign some new coaches (or at least promote a couple) and probably need to replace some aging veterans. But the biggest problem this off-season is all the players with expired contracts. Of course, this might not be a problem at all. All the players COULD sign a 5 year deal at a reasonable price... but deep inside we all know that's not gonna happen.

List of Vikings players with expiring contracts in 2010
    (not including practice squad players)

    In order of most valuable:

    Linebacker ---------- Chad Greenway
    Wide Receiver ----- Sidney Rice
    Defensive End ----- Ray Edwards
    Defensive End ----- Brian Robison
    Quarterback -------- Tarvaris Jackson
    Safety ---------------- Husain Abdullah
    Linebacker --------- Ben Leber
    Place Kicker ------- Ryan Longwell
    Offensive Line ----- Ryan Cook
    Defensive Tackle - Fred Evans
Linebacker --------- Erin Henderson (only restricted free agent)
    Defensive Tackle - Pat Williams
    Quarterback -------- Brett Favre
    Fullback ------------- Naufahu Tahi
    Cornerback -------- Frank Walker
    Cornerback -------- Lito Shepperd
    Safety ---------------- Eric Frampton
    Wide Receiver ---- Greg Lewis

    Vikings Free Agents In 2011

2011 can be a strange year for the Vikings and the NFL (to say the least), with all the CBA talk, what will be the cap, what tags will teams have, will there (or when) will there be an 18 game season, Vikings playing outdoors, new Viking stadium and where, is a lockout needed to keep Favre in Hattiesburg (where does Scott Hansen stay for the summer now?), rookie salary cap (underclassmen enter draft to beat this cap or stay in school to miss lockout), who's going to be the Vikings coach, will they hire a GM.......then we get to look at resigning

Jan 2 2011 Vikings 2010 season ends

Jan 15 2011 underclassmen have to declare draft eligibility

I guess the first question being answered starts getting answered after Sunday will be the coach (I tend to doubt there will be a GM hired unless Rick or Rob are moved into the role or are moved out to bring one in, then the GM would start the coach hunt) the answer could also come after the SB if the team wants to look at candidates that are tied up in the game.

March 1 2011 start of free agency (CBA is done, what happens now, no cap no tags, wild west signings or lock out???)

    April 20-24 2011 NFL draft

I think the top 2 on the list are the most important, then maybe Leber and Longwell, then the rest could be replaced by other FA signings or draft picks (Cook, Evans and Frampton sure help with depth....Cook? meh maybe) but the Vikes can't lose them all its just too much turnover.

    Good link.

I am going to highlight the ones that I would like to see re-signed.

IMHO it is realistic that we could sign the majority of those guys and the rest can be filled by FA and the draft. The rest can be replaced by UFA's and such at the same value we are paying them.

we will also be wise to sign #28 to a big extension early next year or even this off season.

Rice and Greenway are the absolute necessities. Longwell is pretty close to that. Robison and Abudllah would be nice to have back.

The rest I'm ok with either way besides Favre and Lito..they're absolute must-leaves.
    Skol Vikings! Go Cubs!

I like your picks but I would add Abdullah. He has looked pretty good the second half of the season. He is the only safety that I remotely trust.

Greenway better be signed. I would like to see Rice but I'm not convinced he's all that and a bag of chips. He has looked good and he's looked ok, but he has had problems staying healthy. Leber can be replaced and is nothing special just solid. Phat Pat is awesome but he's lost a step and isn't the same force he once was. I like Longwell and think he needs to be signed.
I bet you could use a cool one huh Clark...Now you're talkin Eddie...

Greenway and Rice are important players.

Longwell gave the Vikings one of the worst defensive starting positions after kick-off in the NFL. Longwell is replaceable.

... but he's an excellent field goal kicker. Arguably the most reliable.

I would like to see us bring in another kick-off specialist. The kick-offs were horrible this year and it'll likely get worse next year. Seems like Longwell kicks shorter every year. Last games have been exceptionally short kicks.

i think that we need to keep

    Greenway
    Rice
    Robison
    Abdullah
Leber-deserves to come back but not for huge contract.

The ones i think deserve a shot next year
    Frank walker
    Erin Henderson
Jackson-just so we have a backup he plays well as a back up just not a starter

and those are the ones id keep
of course need to resign peterson plus it would open up cap space if there is a cap after the next cba.
