How much do you think is needed to sign the draft picks? If it stays as it is now with #17, 48,51...

7 mil is good, but that 7 will be like 6.4, next year and 4.7 the year after that. And that dosn't give us alot of room if we do move up to sign a franchise QB

Next season the cap space goes up another 10 mil. That was in the new CBA agreement. If I find a link, I will post it..

Plus Hutchinson counted 13 million in cap space this year, and will only about 6 million (or less) next year. Along with the other fee agents we signed they will probably not count as much against the cap next year.

Bryant McKinnie is a FA next year, and I hope we sign him during the season to an extension and wrap him up for 5 more years. If he does not sign we can always Franchise tag him, but we might not be able to do that until after the 1 year is up on Hutchinson deal, which is after FA starts. McKinnie has to stay below the 7 million average of Hutchs deal, or Hutchs deal becomes guaranteed and we take a huge cap hit that year.

That was never really clarified. Most of the reports state that he has to be the higest paid OL for 2006 only. Some of the reports state Hutch would have to be the highest paid OL after 2006, but that doesn't make sense, or the restructure of Jones's contract would have met the stipulation.

I am fairly certain there will be no restrictions on what we can pay McKinnie next year.

EDIT: Nevermind. I reread you post and you were talking about not being able to franchise him until after the 1 year from Hutch is up. You are right.

Reading over that reminds me that a lot of our "smaller" moves are a really solid investment.
I think that Richardson and Williams are amazingly good pick ups and our team should be quite interesting to watch perform next season.
Still would like to see BJ not be the man ... but we will see.

Thanks for the read. I know I've been wondering. It looks as though the rest will be spent on the draft.

The NFL year runs until the 1st day of FA, if we sign him to a higher average per year before that date (this year was March 11) it would activate that clause. If we Franchise tag him and he gets the average of the top 5 O-tackles in the league and that pushes his salary above 7 million next year then it would activate the clause.

Last year the 17th pick was David Pollack drafted by Cincinnati. He signed a 5 year 10 million dollar contract with about 7 million guaranteed, he held out for almost a month.

Marcus Johnson was the 49th player selected last year, he signed with the Vikes for 5 years for 3.5 million, with a 1.5 signing bonus.

If we made a move to get Leinart at # 2 this is what the minimum would be.

Last years # 2 Ronnie Brown, signed a 5 year 34 million contract that had 20 million in guaranteed money, and 10 million signing bonus.

Great point WTP!! If we have only $7mil, how do we pay for the new rookies? Is there seperate money for rookies or maybe the money doesn't count against the CAP?
    It all starts up front
