Lloyd has 51 touchbacks over the past two years and had 21 on 72 kickoffs last season. Lloyd has never attempted a field goal in two-plus NFL seasons.

Not sure if I fully support carrying 3 kickers, but I sure hope this happens.
I don't like having 3 kickers either but I would like to keep Longwell and have a guy that can kick the ball in the endzone on kick-offs. If this guy has any talent at all in the punting department then it would be a good thing. As long as he isn't a common shank artist then I would give up the 45 yard punts for 40 yarders with some hang time and a few more touchbacks every now and again.
Although not quite the disdain I have for the Noodle, Kluwe is right up there, so you wouldn't get a rise out of me if they got rid of his booming leg/ass.

I'd much rather have a cat who can kick it to the right spot rather than a guy who just kicks the shit out of it and doens't have a KLUWE were its going.
You'd think someone could teach Kluwe to do kickoffs.

He certainly has the leg... and it can't be that tough, I'm sure he used to do it in high school.
I have Kluwe do kickoffs for the Vikings in Madden.

I don't like the idea of using a roster spot for a guy to kick deep. Most of the time it won't hurt us, and really isn't a big part of why we lost in the NFCCG.

It would be nice to have a guy who can do it all, kickoffs and accurate field goals, but I think it's more important for us to create some depth in other places, and keep last years team together. It's a good group with a lot of chemistry built, even if the kicker/punter/ls are barely a part of the team, they contribute.
I read an article this year were it was discussed (quotes from Kluweless) that they were trying to change how they did punts (and associated coverages) this year.

More of a directional/spot thing instead of the "Kick the shit out of it" thing they did previously.

My guess, the staff not only has issues with how short Shortwell is off the tee, the might also be looking at fixing our directional punting issues as well.

On a side note. I did think Kluwe did a better job this year, but there were several gaffs that even to the most casual of observers, were his issue.

How cool is it that we are in the stage of the rebuilding process were the first issue to be addressed is on ST's.

Damn I love how they put this team together, even though we have been forced to watch kids learn on the field in alot of cases.

    A kickoff specialist in Minnesota?
LOL, everytime a new article comes up I get a mental picture of a few select PPO'rs who are freaking out right about now.......

Re:Vikings finally line up a visit

Lloyd was a kicker and punter for the Gopher's for a couple of years he is used to the Metrodome.

He was not good at field goals or punts but has a strong leg and did well on kikcoffs I would bring him in just for that.

I don't like Longwell's kickoffs and want a kickoff specialist that can make them start from the 20 each time.

In the Saints game they won the field position battle all game long and it cost us.
What we've got here is failure to communicate.

    Thanks for the Gopher background.

There have been a few of us who hacked on ole Shortwell about his KO'ffs, all the while being subjected to stuff the pointed out his FG accuracy as a reason to put up with it.

I think the Saints game was a eye opener for some, almost to the point that now all we will here is "I've been saying that for years" kindof comments.

Don't worry though, PPO has a neat thing called the search function, as with the Tahi discussion it won't be hard to remind them what thier original stance was..... .......

I've been saying for years that his kickoffs are fine. And I'm not changing that stance because the Saints were able to return a couple of them a long distance which is not, necessarily, Longwell's fault.

Yea, I don't blame it on Shortwell that the Saints can pin a dynamic returner in the endzone.

I do, however, blame the coaching staff because the Vikes can't. They are the ones who keep running ole Shortwell out there with his low trajectory, no hang time, short kickoffs instead of getting a cat who can kick it to the back of the endzone.

I mean, who are we kidding here. What real difference is field position between the two approaches?
