RealScouts: Top 10 under-the-radar free agents

    9. Nate Washington, WR, Steelers
He is a dangerous downfield threat who has improved his route-running skills. With the emergence of Santonio Holmes and the drafting of Limas Sweed, Washington's Pittsburgh days are over. He can work from the slot or on the perimeter, and his straight-line speed is a concern for most cornerbacks.

    Re: Vikings eyeing Nate Washington

Just How Good Is Nate Washington?

But NFL teams need to know what they are getting. If a team is looking for a solid No. 2 receiver who can get deep on most anyone, then Washington would be a great acquisition. But Washington's hands are not consistent enough to be a No. 1 receiver, and he's not nearly as comfortable moving the chains on slant routes as he is at running a fly route.

Washington's catch percentage (percentage of catches on passes thrown his way) according to Football Outsiders was 51 percent this year. It was 52 percent last year and 51 percent in 2006, so it's safe to say that Washington usually catches about half the passes thrown his way, which is one of the worst percentages in the league. Partly that's because Washington runs a lot of deep routes, but it's also because of his questionable hands.

Weird. I don't see him on the drop list or not caught list.

The Top 25 Free Agents of 2009

    13. Nate Washington, WR, Steelers: The oft-overlooked playmaker has quietly averaged more than 16 yards per catch in his career. Washington is a speed receiver who shows a proclivity for making big plays on the outside. With several teams in desperate need of such a weapon, Washington is much higher on free-agent boards than most would believe.

I was going to mention this when I saw his name on FA too. Very interesting..He was used in PIT for deep routes only, and is getting better, maybe entering his prime...Marrdro would say this is the type of guy the FO likes, coming off his first contract...

I think its a totally different stat. For example, if you are own a deep route, but misjudged the pass and can't catch up to it, its not a drop, but it is a pass intended that you didn't catch. What is weird is that that kinda depends on the QB, and it means Nate only saw 80 targets last year?

I think Housh is obviously superior, but I'd rather have Nate over Harrison.

Coles is also an interesting option (the guy has one sub 50 catch year, his rookie year).

In the end I would maybe prefer a rookie who could do returns as well.

He is also not on the passes not caught list. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Awesome....I'd like to see him become a Viking.

I think our receiving corps would be pretty decent then....

Would it be good enough to lure...say....Kurt Warner?
