Could this mean that they are thinking of shopping Ray Edwards around? Maybe a trade. Hmmmm.

I believe the first round tender on Ray was a means to get another first round draft pick.

I am not sure why this staff hasn't signed this cat to a long term deal going into last year, let alone going into this one.

Only thing that I can come up with is that they are worried he won't be able to stand up to the rigors of the LDE spot over the life of that contract.

Again, not sure why. Sure he has had some injury issues since moving out there, but he has stood up alot better than I originally thought he would.

Gotta be something else going on that we don't know about. Maybe another "Starcaps" like event maybe?

I think Kampman was a little lost in the OLB spot in the 3-4. He belongs with his hand in the dirt. Would be nice to have him on the other side of Allen if Edwards does not stay.
    We're bringing purple back.

Why wouldn't he get a chance? You don't think he is good enough to beat out Mitchell?

I hear ya about your eval of him, but hey, you guys let the Noodle go, let Kampman go....etc. Seems your staffs ability to evaluate talent seems to be lacking of late.
I don't know if he's good enough to beat out Mitchell. I can't recall seeing Mitchell play. Lol.

My point was more that he most likely won't see the field a whole lot at all. And he's no pass rushing specialist, so he'll be rotational only. There's a big chance that, the times that he sees the field, it might not even be with Allen out there, as well.

Next to that, the year that he did get his chance to play, he did play on a D-line with Kampan, Pickett and Jolly/Cole. Not exactly your D-line, but no slouches either, and he couldn't get to the QB at all.

Although that was from the RDE spot and no the LDE one.

Like I said, it's going to be interesting to see what he can do if he gets out there with the rest of your starters on the D-line. Question is, how much will that happen, but we'll see.

We led the Noodle go to go with Rodgers. I'm going to chalk that one up in the win column. Kampman didn't fit in the 3-4. If anything, I was worried that we where going to resign him. I'm glad that he wanted to put his hand on the ground again and the Jaguars threw some money at him. I wish him the best, he's a great player and even better person, but I'm glad that we didn't get him back.
I know you know, but I just want to make sure......

The LDE's primary job is to stop the run. His secondary job is to contain his end from reverses/end arounds, his tertiary job is to get pressure on the QB.

I don't think the Vikes are bringing him in to play LDE in an effort to rush the QB.
In most scheme`s I`d tend to agree with that. However, that seems to be something us vikings fans make up to cover the fact that we havne`t had a LDE that has been exceptional at rushing the passer.

The fact is, in the cover 2, we rely on pressure from the QB. to be successful. We shouldn`t have to blitz to get pressure, and when we do, we take somebody out of coverage and get burnt. If our LDE was not trying to rush the passer, then all a QB needs to do is move to the right a bit to buy time and pass.
Have you looked at our LDE's stats in this area? Sure, he only got 8 sacks last year, but he lead the league in hits and was tied at 4th in the league with our RDE for QB pressures.

Doesn't mean he isn't putting on pressure, just means he has to read/react to something else first before he makes that move.
Name one notable LDE we`ve had since switching to the Cover 2. We`ve arguably had the most success on defense with Ray edwards. Why? because he's good at rushing the passer. When we get pressure, we can keep our LB's in coverage. I'd gladly give up our first overall run defense we had for three seasons for an improvement in pass defense. And thats what we got. the LDE can't go balls to the wall and rush the passer like Allen does, otherwise he'd give up draws and runs like crazy, but we need a strong pass rush for any type of success in this scheme.

You lost me. I think we are basically saying the same thing. Only difference is think I see is how I believe the LDE's priorities are set in the base defense prior to passing situations.

Again, 1rst and 10. He is looking run, then contain, and then rush.

2nd and 5. Here is were it is tricky as he has to make a good pre-snap first ready (usually given by the MLB). Still he will play run, contain, and then rush.

3rd and short. Same thing. First read will dictate but in most cases he is still playing run first.

3rd and long. Depends on the rotation, but in alot of instances (especially later on in the game) Ray will/should come out for a situational/fresh leg guy (ala Rob) cause the first responsibility should be contain then rush depending on the MLB's call. If there is no TE there, he might even rush first but OLB would then have contain then run/screen.

Re:Vikings to bring former Packer DE in for a visit

Obviously it will depend on the situation. 3rd and short they better be thinking run first, but first and 10, no reason to not rush the passer. If our scheme relies on pressure form our front four, but only three are really rushing, there's a problem.
