Terps' Davis won't return to Maryland
UM tight end has hired agent, started training in Ariz. for Feb. 20 NFL combine

Maryland tight end Vernon Davis will not return for his senior year, as he has hired an NFL agent and officially declared for the NFL draft, he said today.

Davis, who was the Terps' leading receiver this past season, said the league should receive his paperwork this week. He said NFL officials told him he is likely to be selected in the first round, which made his decision easy. "I knew if I had a good season I'd probably think about leaving," said Davis, who finished the regular season as the Atlantic Coast Conference's leader in receiving yards per game with 79.2. "I knew that much. There wasn't anything holding me back, but I knew if they told me I'd get a first round grade I was going to leave."

Davis, a graduate of Dunbar High School in Washington, said he informed Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen of his decision after the Terps' 5-6 season. "He came to his senses and realized I really wanted to go," Davis said. "He supports me."

Friedgen was not immediately available for comment.

Davis hired his agent, Zeke Sandhu from Lock, Metz and Malinovic after Christmas. NCAA rules prohibit him from playing next season. "His chances are great," Sandhu said. "He's just preparing for all the drills and everything the NFL is going to put him through."

Davis began training at Athletes Performance in Tempe, Ariz., this morning. Peggy Iralson, a spokesman for the facility, said his agent pays for the training. Iralson said Davis began to go through evaluations and tests this morning in preparation for the Feb. 20 NFL combine in Indianapolis, Ind. Davis indicated he'd like to wind up with either the Oakland Raiders or the New York Jets because of their locations.

"I'm very excited," said Davis, who is renting a Cadillac Escalade. "It's not overwhelming to me or anything like that, everything is the same. I'm just taking my time. Right now I'm just looking to get better as an athlete, perform up to the highest level I'm able to perform and show everybody what I can do."

Davis, who recorded about three percent body fat when last tested at Maryland, will go through a series of tests today with physical therapists that will reveal any limiting factors or hidden injuries that might hinder his performance. He will also be tested again in a 40-yard dash and the bench press, and will meet with a metabolic specialist to evaluate his conditioning level. "Once we get them through the gate and evaluated," Iralson said, "it's our goal to prepare them to have the most successful NFL combine possible."

Davis, a 6-foot-3 Associated Press All-American and finalist for the John Mackey Award, which is given to the nation's top tight end, led the Terps with 51 catches for 871 yards and six touchdowns. He said he played a part in recruiting Drew Gloster, Maryland's incoming tight end who has visions of filling Davis' shoes. Gloster, of Good Counsel High School in Germantown, is rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com.

"It's going to take him some time," Davis said. "He's gotta learn the offense. I'm not expecting the guy to come in and fill my shoes right a way. I'd say by the time he's a sophomore he should be OK. He's got some big shoes to fill."

    AND.....

    2006 NFL Draft Prospect

    from Dane Brugler

    Position: Tight End
    School: Maryland

    Status: Junior

    Height: 6-3

    Weight: 250

    40-Yard Dash:

    Positives:
An unbelievable athlete, Vernon Davis has amazing strength for a player with his speed and agility. He has good size and soft hands. Davis rewrote every record book in the weight room at Maryland and has a great work ethic. He has all the talent that cannot be taught with tons of potential. Davis has the Kellen Winslow like ability to outrun linebackers and outmuscle cornerbacks.

    Negatives:
Davis is primarily a receiving tight end and could face some troubles trying to block linebackers at the next level. He is only 6’3, but can out leap many receivers. Needs to be placed in a passing offense to fully utilize his talents.

    Overview:
Vernon Davis has a great chance to be a top 15 pick and the first tight end drafted because of his true potential. He has all the tools scouts look for and more in a receiver. Davis is a physical beast and will be a stud in the NFL.Suggested Reading

Just because he is big and strong would NOT necessarily make him a great tight end. Can he block? Can he catch the ball? Does he fumble a lot? Can he run pass routes? Who cares if he's big?!

Re: Veron Davis, our new tight end

Wiggins was just signed to a long term contract last year he isnt going anywhere. Why would we want to waste a first round pick on a position we dont have any problems at? We have a very capable TE and also a very very deep WR core. There is absolutely no need to draft Davis.

And have you ever seen David Boston? That guy looks just like this Davis and look at the numbers he putting up?!

This guy is a beast. I saw him play in 10th row 50 yard line seats vs. unc and i was rooting for maryland. This guy is an atheletic specemin. He averaged more yards per game in the ACC than calvin johnson (a top 10 NCAA WR) and Davis is a Tight End. He is very good at catching. Not the best blocker. He is great at route running.

After saying all of that... We have NO NEED for him so we are not drafting him.

Buddy, Boston was amazing till he decided to get bigger and get on roids. He was too big that he blew out his knees. This guys body is well proportioned. He has a thick upper and lower body frame. Wiggins waddles like a penguin, come on!!!
