The delay to the start of free agency has a downside for teams such as the Vikings, who were more than $24 million under the NFL salary cap and ready to start shopping, as scheduled, last Friday.

If there is an upside, with the start date pushed back to 11:01 tonight, it is that they have a little more time to keep some of their pending free agents off the market.

Case in point: guard Toniu Fonoti. The four-year veteran is expected to test free agency in hopes of a big payday, but agent Steve Feldman said Tuesday that "there is continuing dialogue" with the Vikings.

"He loves the Vikings," Feldman said. "He was thrilled when he was traded there. We're working toward getting him back."

That doesn't mean Fonoti will re-sign with the Vikings, and Feldman wouldn't speculate on the chances of a deal getting done before free agency begins. But thanks to the delays, there's still a chance.

Acquired Oct. 18 in a trade with San Diego, Fonoti played in only one game for the Vikings before suffering a season-ending groin injury.

Briefly:

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf is in Dallas for the special owners meeting, which will continue today. Wilf declined comment through a team spokesman.

Yeah, as long as the man can get in to shape by training camp... And mind you that's a LOT of man to get in to shape.

I agree I think he won't be in shape .. he isn't worth the risk. But I'll let the Vikings staff make that decision as they should be the most aware of his situation.
