3 results in 32 years is not a strategy, it's luck.
There is not a guy like that in every draft. There is not a guy like that in even half the drafts. I most drafts, 5th-7th round picks are busts more often than not.
Also, Joe Montana was drafted in round 3, 82nd overall pick. Not sure how that qualifies as a "late round" pick.
3rd rounders CAN work out, more often than not they don't.
QB and CB it seems are the two positions where drafting early gives you a MUCH larger likelihood of having a great player. Other positions you can pick up later with 'value picks', QB isn't usually one of them.
Quick question, if (I don't it happens, just want to ask though) all 3 are there do you take one or do you go on the assumption that because all the teams ahead of passed, there is something wrong with them?Quote:

It's the case of "if everybody jumped off a bridge would you do it?" Don't follow trends. If there's a rush to draft a position you really want/need, then maybe consider it, but if good players are dropping, no reason why you would pass on them as well unless you also saw something that made you really not want them.
Quick question- If every team ahead of the vikings defers their pick because they think there are no legitimate #1 players, do you think we should also defer or pick the best player we have rated in the draft?Quote:

You have drafts like 2007 where Kevin Kolb was the best QB in that class (still unproven). Jamarcus was the top pick and Quinn was selected later in 1st (both considered busts). Second round of the draft was Kevin Kolb (decent), John Beck (don't even know what team he plays for), Drew Stanton (He's not Detroit's future as a 3rd stringer). Also notable draftees in that draft class were Trent Edwards (3rd) and Tyler Thigpen (drafted by us).
Then you have drafts like 04 where you find very good QBs. You had Manning, Rivers, Roethlisberger, and Losman in the first and Schuab was the next QB taken in the 3rd!!! 4/5 of those guys ended up panning out and being great QBs in this league and legitimate starters.
My point being is that we do need a QB I do understand that. Can any of these guys be a QB of the future? Yes this class does have POTENTIAL, but like Warren Sapp said "Potential is what they haven't been able to do yet." I don't like this draft class at all and I would compare it to the class of 07 which simply has too many red flags for each player. A lot of these guys are going to be boom or bust.
This team is simply not ready to win now. There are so many pieces missing to the puzzle that we have to fill before we think about making a run at the Lombardi. We've always needed a QB because we have always had everything else in place for a QB to be successful. That is no longer the case. We don't have a great line anymore, offensively and defensively, we have a new coaching staff who has yet to even talk to the players on our team, and we have holes at almost every position. We should just think about putting all the pieces together one by one, and eventually one of those pieces will just so happen to be a Quarterback.
I think this team can win any given Sunday, but doing it consistently, I highly doubt. At least for next year.

Pro Football Weekly has the vikes taking Wisconsin DE Watt in the first round. I don't hate that idea. With some questions regarding the other DE spot, it would be good to have some competition in there for Brian Robison. Plus Watt is just the kind of no-nonsense hard working true football player anyone wants on their team. A guy like Adrian Peterson who doesn't quit no matter what the score is and gives it everything he can.
If you've heard Watt's story, he has worked for everything he has and doesn't take much for granted. that sounds like kind of guy who will work to the bone to hold a starting position.
I know, the overwhelming need at QB is hard to overlook, but there are enough questions about every single QB in the draft that it probably wouldn't be hard to pick up a guy in the second, sign a veteran FA/Trade for a veteran and still pick up Watt. shoot they could trade the 12th pick and pick up a late 1st rounder and a high to mid-range second rounder at least.
Just a thought.
yeah I do like Watt too but how does he fit in to our scheme? from what I hear he is a 3-4 end. I also personally like Da'Quan Bowers story if you guys have heard.
