DE looks to be our biggest need position, but I don't want us taking a DE unless one of 5 DE's fall to us: Chris Long, Calais Campbell, Quentin Groves, Vernon Gholston or Derrick Harvey.
If Derrick Harvey doesn't make it to #17 we're better off drafting a DE in the second or third rounds, there's always somebody out there thats a sleeper, they just gotta find him. Long and Gholston are gonners in the top 10. After that Harvey seems to be the only one worthy of pick #17.
    Merling?

Merling is a possibility but he only had some like 8 sacks last year. He is just a junior though and his numbers have improved every year he has played. If Merling has a real strong personality and work ethic he could be worthy of the pick.

A few sites have Merling over Harvey, but Harvey's the better pure pass rusher so I'd take him. If neither are available, I'd go with one of the numerous 1st round grade OT prospects.

    Agreed.
I think I'd take a OT over C. Campbell as well.
If the value is not there then I would go with DB or WR.
If somehow one of the top 2 DTs fell to us, that would be sweet too.

With Holcomb cut and the FA QBs thinning rapidly, we might be forced to draft one somewhere...and we found out last year that we can't rely on our current backup to win games.
I don't think it will be a first, but if they feel a first round talent falls to the 2nd...they just might grab him in a BPA move.

Re: So Who Do We Draft Now??

My guess/dream would look something like:
    1. Round Derrick Harvey(DE)/Chris Williams(OT)
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/derrick-harvey?id=762
Harvey would bring the Pass Rush we really need!
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/chris-williams?id=332
With McKinnie´s violet raid we might look after a trade and Williams would fit nicely into the Zone blocking. Very athletic.
    2. Round Lawrence Jackson(DE)/Sam Baker(OT)
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/lawrence-jackson?id=260
Jackson reminds me a lot of Udeze. He could play that LDE we need now.
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/sam-baker?id=186
Sam Baker is also an athletic
tackle and would fit with the ZB.
    3. Round Jordy Nelson(WR) & Thomas DeCoud(S)
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/jordy-nelson?id=1032
Nelson had an outstanding senior season and could be a future slot star. Like Welker did with the pats.
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/thomas-decoud?id=1357
Thomas DeCoud would give us someone for when Sharper retires.
    4. Round Mike Pollak(C)
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/mike-pollak?id=294
I am not sure about Mozes and with Pollak we get a nice center prospect.
    5. Round Frank Okam(DT)
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/frank-okam?id=290
Pat don't live forever and if we want to keep our awesome run D we need a huge 1-tech like Okam.
    6. Round Colt Brennan(QB) & Tommy Blake (DE)
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/colt-brennan?id=196
Colt Brennan would be a project. He could turn into a nice NFL QB. He has a quick release which is impotent in our WCO playbook.
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/tommy-blake?id=1964
Tommy has a mental problem and might not ever take a snap in NFL. But if he can get healthy he has awesome talent.
    7. Round Zack Bowman (CB)
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/zackary-bowman?id=2666
Boom or bust kind of player. I like taken chances in the lower rounds. You might find some hidden star!

    Very nice post my friend.
I love the way you layed it out and presented actual data to support
    your players.

    Couple of comments though.

Still not quite convinced we need all that help at OT and C.
Until someone convinces me Chase Johnson and Dan Mozes are pieces of crap, we (IMHO) have some youth that have at least one years experience in this system (behind starters our starters) who should be able to come in and fill a spot with less impact/loss of production than some rookie who hasn't even seen the blocking schemes we run.

I do like the players you picked though.
My guess is that we will now draft a OT someplace in this draft as there is a butt load of them.
Probably not as high as you have them though.
Additionally, I don't see them drafting a C at all.
Maybe a few undrafted guys will be invited in to compete at C, G and OT though.

    Colt Brennan.
He is an interesting player but I just don't see him having any luck other than a career backup in the NFL.
I guess I do like his release but just not sold on the fact that he will be able to see over the bigger OL in the NFL.
I kindof like the Ainge kid that Gregcox pointed out.

Love Frank Okam by the way.
I bet his stock rises a bit though.
Might have to get him a bit sooner if we don't take a Pat Sims or Red Bryant sooner.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

You are right that those two players have a year in the system. But Mozes had a bad injury and from knowing the playbook till playing it right take reps. He did have a real good college carrier but was first moved to center as a junior. Might be more of a guard in NFL.

We do not have depth at o-line and I think that we need more. If we could get Williams or Baker i think we would look real good for the future. I would rather develop a 1/2 rounder than an undrafted.

well we agree on we should pick a OT somewhere in the draft. That is always a beginning And we should get as many O-line and d-line in the camp as we can! The trenches win championships.

Drew Brees is only 6` and Brennan is 6`3. So high should not be the problem. I think Brennan is either gonna be awesome or he will be gone in 3-5 years.

Yea value is always changing so we might have to take him earlier But we need someone for when Pat stops.

As I just pointed out in another thread, why don't we have depth at the OL position?
I don't count Loeffler but add Mozes to this list and it is a pretty deep.

    78 Matt Birk C 31 6-4 308 10 Harvard
    62 Ryan Cook C 24 6-6 328 2 New Mexico
    [s]46 Cullen Loeffler C 27 6-5 241 4 Texas [/s]
    64 Anthony Herrera G 27 6-2 315 4 Tennessee
    75 Chase Johnson OT 24 6-8 330 R Wyoming
    72 Marcus Johnson OT 26 6-6 321 3 Mississippi
    74 Bryant McKinnie OT 28 6-8 335 6 Miami (FL)
    79 Artis Hicks OG 29 6-4 335 6 Memphis
    76 Steve Hutchinson OG 30 6-5 313 7 Michigan

Now if you want to say you aren't happy with the backups, or the backups suck as your reasoning behind you contention that we lack depth, then I might agree, however, I like were we stand at the OL (even though I ping on them alot).

Only one I would really believe needs to be upgraded is Hicks and I would assume he will go to make room for Mozes.

In your opinion, who leaves to make room for the guys you want to draft?

Re: So Who Do We Draft Now??

IDK, with the guys we signed so far.. I'd like to see us try and sign Antwan odom and maybe another safety for depth..

then in the draft, i'd reallllllyy
like to see us take Limus Sweed with our first pick... I feel like he has the ability to be a true game changer.. unless we sign a b.johnson or Hackett, then i think we're set at receiver....

with the second i'd want us to go DT or QB, (maybe Chad Henne')

3rd, I like to go QB/DT and safety...

    4th DE

    5th LB

    6th (from Jax) corner/return man

    7th OL

another possibility is trading our 3rd for Sage Rosenfels.... they were discussing but Houston wants a 2.. which is entirely too high for him..

I'd also like to see what it would take to get Jason Taylor from Miami.. a second rounder would be worth it.. i'd even go as high as a first but we'd have to pay him and he's gettin up there in age..

Yea i am think more that the quality lacks. Hicks I think we might see go. Well it all depends if the coaches thinks Chase Johnson got future or not. I also think it might be time to let Marcus Johnson go.
