Offensive tackle Mike Rosenthal agreed to a restructuring of his contract, according to agent Joe Linta, who said the result was a split contract that limits the Vikings' financial responsibility this season in the event of an injury.

If Rosenthal remains healthy, he will collect his full salary.
Linta said he and the Vikings continue to discuss a possible restructuring of center Matt Birk's contract but that any injury protection for the team would be offset by a bonus for Birk.

"I can give them 49 million reasons not to redo Matt Birk's deal," Linta cracked, referring to the seven-year, $49 million contract of newly acquired guard Steve Hutchinson.

    On hold:

The Vikings are still talking to linebacker Sam Cowart, but agent Paul Healy said Wednesday's conversation didn't include a contract offer.

Cowart, the Vikings' starting middle linebacker last season, is weighing an offer from Houston. But Healy said his preference is to remain in Minnesota.

    Safety in numbers:

Punter Chris Kluwe won't participate in the Vikings' April 7-9 minicamp after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee after the season. Childress said the team might have to add a veteran punter as insurance.

The Vikings expressed early interest in Jason Baker, but he is expected to sign elsewhere. Other veteran punters available are Tom Rouen, Bryan Barker, Kyle Richardson and Sean Landeta.
