The Minnesota Vikings traded with the St. Louis Rams to move to the second pick of the fifth round to select Booty. Tarvaras Jackson is shaky as the Vikings’ starter, and Booty just might be able to put a little bit of heat on him this summer.

"(Watching videotape of Booty) you see him do so many things that we do in our offense," Vikings coach Brad Childress said. "You say, 'I wonder if he can make that kind of throw,' and there is that kind of throw. It's easy to factor him in. He looks like he has a good command of the game. There's always a learning curve, and that’s why (veteran) Gus Frerotte is here.

"Obviously, John is going to get some snaps in the preseason and you'll have chance to evaluate him there."

Did anyone notice how Childress said that he likes Booty and is wondering if Booty could start, and if he can make "all the throws" in our offensive scheme ? Chilly later went on to say that if Booty shows it in the pre-season...

To me, this is a veiled statement that the QB position is open and that Booty can take it by stepping up and being good in the pre-season. Booty will get lots of snaps in the first 4 games before the season officially starts, and I think he can win the job this way.

I think Chilly was using these statements to push Tjack.
Internal competition is always a good thing, wether your talking NFL or private sector business.
This will make Tjack push himself that much more, and posses the potential to bring out things in him he didn't even know he was capablve of at this stage in his NFL career.

You're an idiot...Booty won't win the job...he's a rookie...and Childress will want to see how Jackson adjusts in his 2nd full season. If it was a year from now at this time and Jackson played as bad as last year for the 2nd season in a row, you might have a valid point. Booty will be the 3rd QB this year...and thats if he can win the job over Brooks Bollinger. Hopefully this guys good enough to make the roster but theres no way he's good enough to win the starting job...not this year anyway.

If Tarvaris were awesome, I might agree with you. But he isn't, and so I don't see a huge downside in starting another "raw" QB. To me, it is just the same as what we already have: raw talent. So let the "other" raw talent also compete.
