Official: The Vikings have the 12th overall pick

I'm not so sure we pick 12. According to NFL.com strength of schedule is the first tie breaker for draft slots. We are one of 7 teams at 6-10. According to: http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/21479/2010-strength-of-schedule

The Texans, Titans, Lions, Redskins and Cowboys all had a tougher strength of schedule coming in...or do they go by 2010 win/losses now that its over?

Cuz, I was hoping we had the 8th pick!!! Which, would give us a shot at Locker or Mallet.

Anybody know for sure if that slot is officially official!?!?!???

Edit: And, we have the worst division record of all the 6-10 teams!

Head Coach: Leslie Frazier (formerly interim head coach)

    Expected defensive scheme: 4-3

    Team Needs:

Quarterback: Brett Favre has to be done, right? Quarterback is a big need for this Vikings team. They have the talent to be a Super Bowl contender next year, but to do that they must add a quarterback who can at the very minimum manage the game and limit turnovers.

Outside Linebacker: Chad Greenway and Ben Leber will be free agents. It is unlikely both will leave, but losing even one makes this a priority for Minnesota. Losing both would be devastating.

Defensive Tackle: Pat Williams has made comments that this could be his last year. His status as a free agent also makes his leaving more likely. Kevin Williams is one of the best tackles in the NFL, but he needs a big body next to him that can draw double teams.

Free Safety: The Vikings ignored the safety position in the 2010 draft, to the surprise of many. Madieu Williams is good enough, but if given the chance to get younger at the position the Vikings should pull the trigger.

Strong Safety: And just like free safety, strong safety is a need the Vikings didn't address last year. Tyrell Johnson looks promising when healthy, but depth is at the minimum a need here.

Guard/Offensive Tackle: The Vikings have a good offensive line, especially with it comes to run blocking. Adding depth, and young players to challenge the established veterans, could be a late-round focus for Leslie Frazier's first draft.
2011 NFL Draft Order: Holes Each Team Needs to Fill

These guys list only 3 teams ahead of us that need QB as thier primary need.

Again, gets us the 4th best QB.
And that's if all 3 take a QB. The teams under us have lots of needs and if they see blue chip prospect at another position they could easily go another direction. I would be suprised if we didn't get at least our 3rd option at QB, wouldn't be shocked to get number 2.
Looking at recent drafts I don't see more than 1 or 2 QB's going in the first 15 picks or so.

12 is what's being reported. My guess is they go by strength of schedule based on 2010 standings. The Vikings had a very tough schedule.

Official: The Vikings have the 12th overall pick

    1. Carolina Panthers
    2. Denver Broncos
    3. Buffalo Bills
    4. Cincinnati Bengals
    5. Arizona Cardinals
    6. Cleveland Browns
    7. San Francisco 49ers
    8. Tennessee Titans
    9. Dallas Cowboys
    10. Washington Redskins
    11. Houston Texans
    12. Minnesota Vikings
    13. Detroit Lions

So, most are assuming Luck is going No.1, so that is one down. IMO, Bills could still go QB, Bengals should, Cards have to, and same could be said of the 49ers. Redskins also need a signal caller. I'm going to go ahead and predict some extra shuffling in the top ten this year as those 6 teams try for the guy they love ahead of our scheduled pick...sorry boyz n girlz, but it doesn't look very good for us snagging a QB in round 1 while already down our 3rd. Doh!

Besides, I'm guessing we'll move up among the 6-10 teams as the rounds go by, so that'll give us 11th pick of the second, and NE the 10th pick of the 3rd and us the 9th pick of the 4th...? Ie, early picks in each round with which we could also address and hopefully upgrade DT, OLB, DB, C/OG so that whoever the QB is has a better chance of success.

With 18 FAs, we may need a starter someplace surprising...like OLB or S. With the 12th pick we may have a shot at the best one out there vs. the 4th or 5th or 6th??? QB!?

As the Vikings season faltered, the Patriots got a better and better deal. The Vikings front office got duped again.

I have to agree with you. As much as I would like the Vikings to go after a top prospected QB I don't see them having a shot at any of them. There are too many needs in the NFL this year. Maybe it happens but I just don't see it unless they trade up.

Here is where I think the Vikings look at a free agent QB or trade for one. The names that come to mind in no specific order are:

    1) D McNabb - Will most likely be a free agent. It's obvious to me (maybe not to others) he didn't have a firm grasp of the Washington offense. He probably plays better in the WCO scheme in which the Vikings have at this time. Would probably be a good pick up however the Vikings would have to bolster their OL. Without that, any QB has troubles.
    2) K. Orton - Will most likely be trade bit. He's a QB that I like because he manages the game well and doesn't turn the ball over much. He has proven he can use the passing game when needed as well.
    3) K. Kolb will most likely be trade bait. I think under the rght circumstance this kid could be a very good QB.

There may be more out there but we have to wait to see who gets released and who gets put up on the block.

What hurts is the loss of the 3rd round pick. I would feel pretty confident if the Vikings kept Randy and they re-signed Rice. Moss, Rice and Harvin would be a very good trio that can help any QB. But now it is an area they may have to draft or go to the free agent pool for. Who know's? Randy may be available again.

I think the Vikings should get a guy like Haynesworth. He has been a cancer in Washington, true. But put him back to the 4-3 scheme and put him next to KWill. Teams will have to double team one of them. The good news is he will most likely be cheap because his reputation has killed him.

We have to address the OL and secondary. No bones about it. I think that is where the Vikings go in the 1st round unless of course I am totally wrong about the QB situation.

Yes. The tie-breaker for teams NOT with the same record but NOT within the same division (meaning the Vikings could not draft behind the Lions since they finished lower than them in the division) is concluded season record of opponents.

Division record is only meaningful for breaking draft order ties between same division teams.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

I guess I am in the minority that thinks it would be FANTASTIC to have Cam Newton fall in our laps. His size, vision and athleticism dwarfs Tim Tebow's (and Tebow has looked like he could have quite a future, though I know it is still early).
I think the Michael Vicks, Cam Newtons, Tim Tebow's and even Andrew Luck's (remember, that cat can run too) are the new breed of QB and I think we would be in a very good position to get Newton at No. 12.

I personally think that when all is graded out Luck will be the clear cut top guy and go to the Panthers at No. 1. Then Locker will end up climbing back to the No. 2 guy once the scouts start drooling over him again. Mallett and Newton will likely be a toss up at No. 3 and No. 4.

Small chance all four go in the first round. So we can nab one at No. 12 or we can try to trade back in later if we really like one of them.

I like the idea of Albert Haynesworth also myself. As you said he will come cheap because of his antics and I would assume he dont care since he has already gotten paid. We also need to either resign Ray Edwards or Brian Robison to keep a good front four.

I have heard Carson Palmers name tossed around a few times as well for a quarterback. No matter what veteran qb we go after we still better draft our future qb this year, I am sick of veteran qb's.

    Resign Greenway and Leber please.

Use the draft for qb, safety and o-line. It will be nice to not have to watch free agents leave before we can go after some.
