Is the NFL draft chart overrated?

Who invented this thing? I seem to recall it was Jimmy Johnson at Dallas. Well, whoever it was, I'd like to know how they assigned values by position. My guess is that it was arbitrary.

The thing that I wonder is if this skews the value of the picks one way or another.

If I were Wilf or Childress, I'd hire some football fanatics/math geeks to run a regression on the value of these picks over some time period to see if the current numerical chart assignments over or undervalue positions of the draft.

The whole point of the chart is that fanatics/geeks created points for each position in the draft ... it was not "just arbitrary" it has strong backing ... otherwise noone would use it.

Simply because everyone does it doesn't necessarily mean its correct. There can be things people are over-looking or mis-valuing. That was the whole thing with Billy Bean in Moneyball.

I don't know. That's why I'm asking.

Oh, and the other thing is that it may not apply for each position. Is a CB taken at the #5 spot the same value as a tackle? I wouldn't think so.
