Charles Robinson, of Yahoo Sports, reports the transcripts of parole violation hearings from New Era Sports & Entertainment associate Lloyd Lake indicate USC OT Winston Justice had contact with the marketing agency during the 2005 season. Lake testified that both Justice and USC RB Reggie Bush were supposed to spend the night out with him. He added, "Well, I had a sports agency we had formed, and we had a guy in, Winston Justice, from USC. And [my girlfriend] had planned to go out with us that night, but Reggie Bush came into town. And at that time, he was going to go out with us, so I told her all his friends were coming and that it wasn't a good night for us to go out, and that kind of got her upset." USC spokesman Tim Tessalone said the school was not aware of the details of the testimony and USC head coach Pete Carroll and athletic director Mike Garrett would reserve comment until the investigation is concluded.

    Wed, 26 Apr 2006 21:46:38 -0700

John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Texas QB Vince Young was surprised when Houston Texans general manager Charley Casserly admitted the team would be selecting North Carolina State DE Mario Williams or USC RB Reggie Bush in the 2006 NFL Draft. "Yeah, I was still surprised when I heard about it," said Young, who came to New York this week to participate in events leading up to this weekend's draft. "I know what the media's been saying about them not taking me, but I wanted to play for my hometown team." Casserly said the team has decided to stick with QB David Carr as their quarterback. "In regard to Vince Young, what we said from the beginning is that when we hired a new coach (Gary Kubiak), the new coach would evaluate David Carr and make a decision on (Carr's) $8 million buy-back bonus. We made the decision to keep David Carr at that time."

    Wed, 26 Apr 2006 21:14:57 -0700

Charles Robinson, of Yahoo Sports, reports the transcripts of parole violation hearings from New Era Sports & Entertainment associate Lloyd Lake detail alleged links between the marketing agency and USC RB Reggie Bush. Marc Carlos, Lake's attorney, contends the sports agency was "in negotiations with recruiting Reggie Bush" and the agency considered "potential litigation – or a settlement involving Mr. Bush's involvement with that agency." Later on Carlos added, "Apparently, what happened is that Mr. Bush – or through his associates – had made some type of agreement with Mr. Lake's group, the sports agency group that they had. There was a meeting to have happened. It was supposed to be on a Saturday where they were going to discuss potential litigation – or a settlement involving Mr. Bush's involvement with that agency."

    Jets | Smokescreens all around
    Wed, 26 Apr 2006 20:52:02 -0700

Ken Berger, of Newsday, reports despite rampant speculation that the New York Jets are considering any number of NFL Draft-day trades, a person familiar with their strategy said Wednesday, April 26, that general manager Mike Tannenbaum is inclined to keep the fourth pick and select either North Carolina State DE Mario Williams or Virginia OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson. According to one NFL personnel man and several agents who have spoken with the Jets, that makes sense, because the team has made it known that it does not like any of the top three quarterbacks enough to trade up for one. However, there was another report the Jets like USC QB Matt Leinart more than people know and would take him with the fourth pick if he's available. Several people involved in the pre-draft wrangling still believe it's more likely that the Jets will address the quarterback position in the second round.
