My thoughts on 2008 Draft
Like all of you, I am very excited for this year's NFL Draft.
The past two drafts have been very successful.
I am hopeful for a third.
This year we are pretty lucky considering the talent level at two areas of need: DE and WR.
If we do not sign a WR in fre agency we must use one of our first 2 picks on WR.
Also, with the unfortunate situation with Udeze and the injury history of James we must also use one of these picks on DE (as it is looking like all the talented free agent DEs will be signed or franchised this year).
If this is the case our first 2 picks go either DE-WR or WR-DE.
Personally I would love to see Miami's Phillips fall to 17 but I don't think it will happen.
It is my opinion we should draft DE in round 1 and WR in round 2.
The quality of DE in round 2 will be much lower than that of round one while the quality of receiver in round 2 is still high.
It is obvious that Goulston and Long and gone in the first 10 picks (maybe 5).
I am looking at Phillip Merling as a great fit.
He is big, athletic, can get to the QB and also play well against the run.
One of the best all around DEs in the draft.
I am not sold on Derrick Harvey yet.
I also think that Calais Campbell has a lot of potential but we need someone to step in right away.
My pick (again if Phillips is gone) in ROUND 1 : Phillip Merling.
In round 2 we look at some help for TJack.
There will be a lot of talented WRs left (potentially one of the following: Bowman, Hardy, Manningham, Sweed, etc.) when we pick.
My choice in ROUND 2: Adarius Bowman.
He would be a great fit with Wade and Rice.
If we did not have such a log jam at TE I would even consider Fred Davis an option.
In round three I think we go BPA (hopefully O-Line and Safety) with our two picks.
To summarize my thoughts:
Rd. 1:
Phillip Merling DE
Rd. 2: Adarius Bowman WR
Rd. 3: BPA (Safety & O-Line, maybe a QB if Henne or Flacco fall)
What do my fellow Vikings fans think?

Re: My thoughts on 2008 Draft
I feel like we should draft a S/DB in the first round, because both Sharper and Smith are getting older, and we could probably use an upgrade over Smith anyway. I think we will probably get a veteran FA to come help out at defensive end since we already have a bunch of youth there. Drafting a receiver depends on what happens in free agency. If we dont pick one up, then I think we would draft one in the 2nd or 3rd rounds, but I think they will make a push for a higher end receiver in free agency.

Re: My thoughts on 2008 Draft
I am not even going to look at the draft this year. At 17 there are far too many things that will change before our pick to sort through. I don't see another Randy Moss falling to us at this spot and we have so many positions that need to be strengthened that as far as I am concerned, unless they pick a DT or a RB they will be filling a need and I won't complain who it is as long as they can develop them into being a great player.

Re: My thoughts on 2008 Draft
We will not draft a DE in round 1. We wil fill our need through FA. We need veterans at DE not more youth than what we already have.

Re: My thoughts on 2008 Draft
DE is one of the strongest positions (next to WR and RB) in this draft.
S on the other hand is a bit weak and that is probably one of our positions of need not only in the near term but for the future as well.
I look for them to take:
a.
Saftey (2 of 5 are FA's, one I'm not sure how much longer he can contain himself and stay out of trouble and the other is getting older than dirt)
b.
DE (switched this one out after Keneche's sad news)
c.
DT (Johnson isn't a true 3 gap DT and is a bit small.
Phat Pat is getting old.
A guy to learn behind him that has the potential to collapse the pocket is a must.
d. FB (even if T-rich signs for another year we have no true FB's on this roster of that have talent)
After that it is all depth.
LB, QB maybe a WR if they don't go and get one in FA.Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

Udeze is definitely out and James has been a no show for years due to injuries.
That leaves us with very little.
DE is a must early in the draft.
The only way we get a good DE in free agency if there is one let go for cap purposes.
All the talented DEs will be tagged.
