Re: Move Dontarrious Thomas to DE?

Right now Dontarious is the first one off the bench should Leber, EJ, or Greenway go down. He is also a beast on our special teams. I really think we resign him unless we can get a trade for him, otherwise he will be resigned, and will continue to be a solid contributer to this team.

Honestly he did struggle his first couple years in the league.
IMO from watching him he had difficulty back then catching up to the speed of the league.
He had a lot of trouble in coverage.
Since then the coaching staff has improved (i.e. Tomlin and Frazier) he's learned the game better but like someone lese stated Leber, EJ and Greenway have been that good to keep him off the field most of the time.

Thomas is a valuble person on the VIkings and I hope they do what it takes to re-sign him.
He has learned the intangeables of the game and he is awesome on special teams.
He's an excellent fill in as a backup to all 3 LBs.

    Interesting question...

He is what would generally be considered to be too light.
    He's listed at 241 lbs.
Compare that to the 300-350 lb. behomeths that he would have to face.
Another comparison is to other speed rushing defensive ends.
Even the small guys are at least 260 lbs. (Kearse, Suggs, Robison...).

That being said, the guy is almost as strong as Robison based soley on draft stats (26 bench reps for Thomas, 27 for Robison).
With several years of NFL training under his belt, I'd say he's probably stronger now.

There's also the issue that even though Thomas is fast, that doesn't necessarily mean that he's got a quick first step that you need to be a big time pass rusher.

But the biggest reason I can think of for not moving him is that he doesn't have the experience using his hands or rushing from a 3-point stance.
It's not as simple as just a few weeks of practice to learn that stuff.

    So, I'd say no.
    Extemely excellent post.
(Props to Mr A. and stateVIKE44 for quality posts as well).

This is the second post I've put something in on this subject today.
DE (both the RDE and LDE) are very complex positions.
You just can't plug someone in to play them.

The RDE is primarily responsible to get to the QB with a secondary responsiblity of run and tertiary responsiblitiy to contain if the play goes to the opposite side.
To do that he has to be not only fast (pass rush) but strong against the run as well.
Usually a typical RDE is no more than 260ish range in weight.

The LDE is primary responsible to stop the run with a secondary responsibility to get to the QB and a tertiary responsibility to contain if the play goes to the opposite side.
To do that he has to be a bit stronger against the run which tends to make them a bit slower than a RDE and they are typically in the 280ish range in weight.

To think a guy that is 240lbs could add enough weight to come in and not only rush the QB but stand up against a 300-360 lb man and still maintain his speed is a bit off the mark.

I agree with the poster who said let him go and get a true RDE or LB out of the draft to replace him.

Thanks for all the good posts.

I feel like we should keep Dontarrious Thomas. He's too valuable to lose. We can't risk losing depth at linebacker.

Re: Move Dontarrious Thomas to DE?

Personally, I believe he knows he can possibly get a starting job somewhere.. So I see him leaving. Which is sad because he is our number one back up for all LB positions

He is also a very good special teams player for us.. Dontarious and Heath are always around the ball

I would love to see him stay considering we don't have much depth.. We would be left with Circiu, Rufus Alexander, and Heath Farwell

I do think Rufus has some upside.. He is unproven however

And Heath I think could fill in alright.. But has never really had a shot

And Vinny is strictly special teams

I think we need to offer him a contract, but don't go overboard.. He is a solid for us and I would be thrilled to keep him around

I think Heath is a FA too...restricted style this year, not next.
I'd love to sign both these guys!!
DT has been great when coming in to backup a LB!!
Talented and intelligent enough to backup all three spots!!?!
    And helps on ST.
Yeah, he'll probably be starting somewhere else next year...D'oh!

    Heath is our ST star!!
I really like how that unit has improved, and would love to see it continue!!!

Sure, he can be a pass rusher...from a 3-4 featuring Pat in the middle, Udeze and KWill flanking ;D
Control the line, control the time, and give your D a chance to shine!!

That would be a great idea actually I think

    3-4 D

    K-will... Pat.... Udeze

    Greenway.... EJ... DT.... Leber

    Make it happen
