    Pat Kirwan's 2011 Two-Round Mock Draft

Some rambling: Biggest surprise is Ryan Mallett going to the second round :woohoo: , doubt that will happen seeing how QB hungry the NFL teams are. Also, Blaine Gabbert goes #7 and Jake Locker #25.
On another note, J.J. Watt goes #9... BEFORE Robert Quinn, Ryan Kerrigan, and Cameron Jordan (who by the way is the second or third time in a mock draft I see him projected to the Vikings. I do not like it!)

Thanks my friend. Seen a few of late that have us taking Locker at 12 now that a few sites have him ranked higher than Newton.

I think it comes down to compromises. IF the players give up some bucks and the high end, first round contracts, they certainly aren't going to want to give up the 4 year minimum for unrestricted Free Agency!! That is when a good player makes his money!

SO, my gut feeling, it that we're going to lose both Ray and Rice, cuz somebody is going to overpay, at least by our standards.
I don't mind loosing Ray. Even though he has done a nice job, I don't see him making it through the life of another contract at LDE.

Rice I'm torn on. I guess I won't be miffed if he leaves and I won't be over joyed if he stays.

I'm also thinking Bigger Center, but who's available as a Free Agent?
I thought so as well but after doing some research, it appears Musgrove likes a smaller center. To date, he's only had one on the roster bigger than 300 lbs.

So, we signed another slot/possesion guy in Iglesias, and a bigger guy in Emmanual Arceneaux, good depth I'm glad we signed to be sure...but also, 2 guys who did not make the rosters of the WR hurting Bores, nor more talented Lions! IF we lose Rice, our depth there is hurting. I'm not so much looking for a burner, as intrigued with Julio Jones' overall package...he's got size, speed, outstanding leap, and is a tenacious blocker!!! I can't find the quote now, but I read somewhere that teams that are more WCO (shorter routes, more YAC) and/or Run First with his blocking ability, would be teams that liked him better than AJ Green. Ie. perfect fit for the Vikings!!
I could be happy with a WR at 12, but think that they can get someone later with almost the same skillset. Rationale behind that is almost every college runs the spread offense. If anybody benifits from that, its the WR's coming out.

I think there's a good chance that we go all offense early, since the Defense is our strong suit, with both players and coaching personel.
Hmmmm, I'm actually thinking we go defense with our first two if we don't go QB with 12. Gotta fix the DL my friend. Can't keep ignoring it.

How do you feel about trading a future first to move back into the back end of the first round for our QB?

Perhaps, a pipe dream, but wouldn't it be sweet if we landed a trio of:
    Julio Jones at 12
    Mallet/Locker/Ponder in the 20s
    Marcus Cannon/Wisneiwski/Pouncey with our 2nd

A true playmaking threat, another young QB to develop, and some size in the middle to help AP find some room to run!?
I could live with that for the first 3. Nice WR, bout the range everyone that passed on QB's early will be trying to get one. Not sure if Wis or Pouncey will last that long. Much rather see them fix the DL with a Paea or Taylor.

Thing is, even though I like it, we could also go:

1rst - Mallet QB - Start him and let him work through the issues.
2nd - Paea DT - Fixes your DL. Helps the backend
4th - ODowd C - If Sully/Coop are to small this guy will step right in.
5th - Deandre Brown WR - Big possesion guy.
5th - Beal or Sturdivant OLB - Projects but you have Jasper/Could resign Erin
6th - Stuckey or Harris FS - You have 3 guys that have been starters if you resign Hussain. this guy adds depth, another option.
7th - Graham or Oordt TE - Two big "Inline" TE's who can block.

Best part is, you address all the issues and you wouldn't have to give up a pick for next years draft.
I like the way you think Marr! I'd pretty happy with that! And, all those 5-7 round picks have ST potential too.

I'm getting pretty excited for this year's draft. Looks to be very interesting with all the needs and no Free Agency yet to address them!

    cheers!!!
    Thanks my friend.

I like the later rounds of the draft even though most scoff at them as a waste of effort.

As I said in another post, I remember when 7 rounds was halfway through the draft.

Truth of the matter is, teams are made up of alot more later round picks than top picks. If the top picks pan out, eventually they outgrow their first contract and go looking for more cash.

In short, no team can afford to sign a whole team of cash grabbers.

I would not be surprised at all if he goes ahead of newton.Actually Newton could easily be the 4th or 5th one taken unless some team in the first 5 picks jumps the gun.

no matter how he is ranked by analysts, Newton is a talent with "unlimited upside" some team in the top 10 is going to fall in love with that... The media hyped him up and now there bringing him down... I just read this article on Newton right now

I wouldnt pick him in the top 20.. Maybe not even the first round..

Yet from what we are hearing.. He is going to go first overall..

This might work out for Carolina, but it is still a massive gamble..

Re: "Mock Drafts I Like/Find Interesting" Thread

I hope we don't pick Newton even if he is available at 12 (doubt it). I have never been a fan of running QBs and we have Webb is a project in that mold. I would like a QB with good accuracy, which is why I am not too high on Locker. Mallett is intriguing because of the skillset, but I have concerns about his maturity. The best case I see with him is him ending up like Cutler - A gifted sourpuss.

I don't watch much college ball, but some of the highlights I have seen of Christian Ponder have me very interested. I think it's a stretch at 12 but would pick him with our 2nd rounder if he is there.

I would use the 1st rounder on either DL or OL.

I think we should do everything we can to re-sign Rice. A proven commodity is better than an un-proven 1st round WR. Having Rice (along with Percy) will make potential free agent QBs think twice about passing over the Vikes. Guys like Palmer (just in case!) and Hasselback are looking for a ring, and having two pro-bowl WRs (to go along with a pro-bowl TE and RB) is very appealing. If we draft a QB instead, having two quality WRs will still only help.

Now I must admit I was pissed that we passed on CLausen and McCoy last year but it proves that our QB evaluation isn't all that bad.

Jimmy Clausen was doomed from the beginning. Everyone praised him so high because he came for a pro-style offense, had good size, a good throwing arm and good technique. Turned out the stuff between your ears are a little important too. I'm not gonna call him a bust just yet, but he looked awful last year.

As for Colt McCoy, I was okay with passing on him with our first pick, BUT THE SECOND!? That pissed me off. He didn't exactly dominate last year, but I liked what I saw.

To me, Colt's the opposite of Clausen. Colt lacks size, doesn't have a strong arm and played in a spread offense, but he makes up for it in character.

All of the scouting being done right now is just a smokescreen so they can snag Stanzi.

I think the Panther are giving up to early on Clausen..

I know he didnt play well in his rookie year, but he was rushed into playing and he also played in maybe the worst team in the league..

Colt McCoy proved he was a pretty good QB with the Browns last year.. Give him a top wideout like AJ Green or Jones and he will do wonders with Joe Thomas and Hillis in the backfield..

Im pretty high on Stanzi, reading up on him.. definatly a fine QB.. I would take him over Locker..
