MERCED — Wendell Mathis will get his opportunity to play in the NFL.
The former Fresno State and Merced High running back signed a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night after not being selected in the NFL Draft last weekend.

"Around the sixth and seventh rounds, I started playing scenarios in my head if I didn't get drafted," Mathis said. "There were some benefits. The obvious good thing about it is a lot of teams called me after the draft so I got to pick and choose where I wanted to go."

Mathis will report to a Vikings mini camp May 12.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 210-pound running back led the Bulldogs last fall with 1,313 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns on 248 attempts. He finished his Fresno State career with 2,308 yards and 27 touchdowns in 24 games.

At Merced, Mathis became the Bears' all-time leading rusher with 3,493 yards. He set single-game (288 yards) and single-season (2,206) rushing records in 2000.

"I'm excited," Mathis said. "Whether I was drafted or undrafted, I was still going to have to go out and make the team. Just because you're drafted it's not a definite thing. I have to prove I belong on the team."

Minnesota could be the ideal situation for Mathis. The Vikings are a team in need of running backs with Onterrio Smith's legal problems and Michael Bennett departing for New Orleans. Minnesota has four tailbacks on its current roster in Mewelde Moore, Chester Taylor, Ciatrick Fason and Joe Echema.

"I feel good about my situation in Minnesota," said Mathis, who spent two years at UCLA before transferring to Fresno State. "The running back coach (Eric Bieniemy) was my coach at UCLA, so I feel comfortable with him."

did the vikes get a new rb? Or perhaps mr. Jansen decided to pass on typing out all of Adimchinobe Echemandu's name. Or maybe Echemandu changed his name?

Cool. What I like about him is that he's been a successful FOOTBALL player, not a guy who was impressive physically or at the combine. He produced and that's what matters in the long run.
