Re: Marrdro's 2009 Roster Analysis - (Updated - 53 Man Roster Projections)

Thanks for the hard work Marrdro, it looks like some good football players will not make the team. I wish they would resolve the court case with Pat, and Kevin so we could plan accordingly. Gonna field a great Viking team this season.

Thanks my friend.

As I said early this year, its gonna be hard to make this team.
That by the way is a good thing.

You have absolutely lost your mind if you think Center is our biggest team need!
Its certainly not the biggest need but a need, I don't think Cook is suited for the position. Sullivan is likely the starter with the heads up on the playbook, his intelligence, ect. A backup Center through the draft or in FA would likely be the best option. There could also be a Center in FA they really like but I doubt someone they like more than Sullivan.
When I say "need", it doesn't automatically mean we draft a guy or sign a vet.
Our young cats are part of that solution.

Truth of the matter is I bet the FO is looking at all options (FA, Draft, Roster) as a possible solution for replacing our current C if in fact he goes anyplace.
So why is OT not in that list of "needs"?
Did you read my OL breakdowns?
Bryant McKinnie T (Starter) – Signed a 7 year contract in 2006.
After some personnel issues off the field impacted his play, he came back to prove his worth/value on this team.
Should continue to anchor the LT position and get a bit better if his attitude continues and he gets finally comfortable with his role in the scheme.

Ryan Cook C (Backup) – Signed a 4 year contract in 2006.
Arguably the weakest link in the OL.
Provides the staff with lots of options with respect to OL future.
Could stay at RT or move to C depending on what transpires this offseason/what the staffs vision is.

Artis Hicks T/G (Starter) – Signed a 5 year deal in 2004.
Can play 4 of 5 positions on the OL and surprised a few this year with respect to how well he held down the LT position in McKinnies absence.
Could be considered as a replacement for Cook at RT regardless of what the staff does with Cook during the offseason.

[s]Marcus Johnson T (Backup) – 2008 was last year of a 5 year contract.
FA that probably won’t be resigned to make room on the roster for one of the new/young guys.[/s]

[s]Chris Clark T (PS) – I can only find something that states he signed with the Bucs.
Status unknown.
[/s]
Drew Radovich T (Backup) – Signed a undisclosed contract in 2008.
Was looking like he would make the roster (eliminating Marcus) as a backup T until he was injured with a dislocated shoulder.
Will probably take MJ’s place on the roster.
Yup, looks like a huge need to me.
So you don't think we "need" any of them to step up?
Please don't equate "need" to the draft or FA alone My Sexy Little Pixie.
Hicks already stepped up to replace Cook. A free agent or draft pick will come in to compete with him. Cook will back up Sullivan at C if Birk is done here. That leaves still a backup spot to McKinnie open. Radovich looked ok but we still need competition for him. Again a #1 need for our team.
So basically you disagree with my analysis because......

a.
You aren't convinced Birk is gone or needs to be replace?
b.
You think Sullivan is more than capable to replace him if he isn't?

......kindof rationale then?
Yes

Love hanging it out there..........Way I figure, once you post a 7 round mock and defend that, 53 man rosters are easy.

Lets see how this all folds out then come back and hack on me.

Re: Marrdro's 2009 Roster Analysis - (Updated - 53 Man Roster Projections)

Not sure what happened to all the original posts, however, here is a look at how I did....

First, the staff made some significant changes this year with respect to what number they kept at each position with a increase in WR, DT, and LB.
This means they shorted themselves at other positions (FB, TE, and DE).

FULLBACKS (1) Normally they carry two and in most cases our TE's are really H-backs instead of TE's which wouldn't cause any worry here, however, they opted to carry one less TE as well.

All you guys who have asking for this for years are finally happy.
They kept 6 instead of thier traditional 5.

;D

On a side note, I was way off on AA and Holt.
DR and JJ really shined this pre-season making AA and Holt expendable.

Finally Mills gets shown the door.
Never really understood what the hell they were trying to do with him anyway.
To small to be a inline TE and they never really worked him at H-back/FB.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (9) As I look at what they kept, it causes concern with respect to what will happen with the wall.

Mitchell is what we might need at LDE and Guion was all over the place.
He and Fred (along with everyone on this line that doesn't get suspended for cheating) are gonna be huge keys to our success this year.

Small or not, I'm sold on this Onatolu cat.
He was all over the place on ST's and seems to have some damn nice coverage skills as a LB.

DEFENSIVE BACKS (10) Was suprised to see the last 3 make it, but not that suprised.
MM sure didn't pop his head out of his ass.
Might be cause this staff is looking for guys who can play inside and out and MM seems to be barely servicable on the outside and has no clue on inside.
My guess is someone will pick him up though that plays a scheme that is better suited to his skills.

On a side note, I've been watching Frampton and Abdullah with interest.
As with KO, these two were in on almost every ST's tackle that I saw (it seems).
At one point, I almost believed a certain LB that everyone is so in love with was gonna get cut.

All in all, looks like we have a damn good looking squad with alot of young, medium, and old talent on the field.
Sure the hell wish this team wasn't tarnished by the addition of LNAD.
Sure glad they opted to keep TJ as a backup for when his old ass gets broken.

Two things to watch....

a.
RT.
How long will the staff let PL start?
My guess, the second time LNAD slaps him in the ass (like he did in the Houston game), Hicks will be in there.

b. TJ. The staff could be divided here.
I believe the coaching staff (and it appears alot of the team) have faith in TJ but does Rickie boy?
How will that dynamic come into play as they start the contract negotiations?

I remember someone laughing at me last year when I suggested 6 WRs.

One thing is for sure, we will see less false starts. How long will they let him start?!?!?!?! How long did they give Cook? Load will get his ample time. It will be fun to watch Cook supporters rip on him.

Two things, ......

a.
You know my feelings on Cook so don't lump me in as his supporter with respect to his play/capabilities.
b.
LNAD won't put up with him out there.
Didn't take long at all to get benched when he almost got him killed two plays in a row.

Look, I loved the pick and really like the cat, however, he just isn't gonna do well at first.
If he can get by at least to week 5 or 6 without getting LNAD broke, then I will be extremely happy, problem is, by that time all the chuckleheads will have turned on him and for what reason?

None at all other than he was run out there by the staff (as was Cook) by this staff before he was ready.

Wasn't me.
I've always said that they have traditionally kept 5.
Would be out of character to keep 6 and I've been saying that longer than just last year.
