That'as assuming the cap stays the same. That's assuming alot.
Also, while we save 24 mil by losing two big players, remember Greenway will be getting a fat raise this year. Peterson will need a new contract = more money. Not sure how you figure we'll get away with giving him LESS money.
I think I can answer this one. There is a reasonable chance with any extension or new long-term deal that the cap figure for the first year will actually be lower. The big money is always pushed back to the last few years of the contract. So, if we ink them properly, both Peterson and Greenway could end up saving us some significant cap room in the short term, but cost a lot later on.

Now, none of that takes into account increasing salaries for guys like Allen, K-Will, Hutch. These guys don't make a flat rate every year.
This is correct. Ongoing salaries are where the costs keep going up.

Lastly, We seem to want to have space if we need it. Nothing worse than being at the cap or over and needing to fill a hole. If we're spending money, I'd rather spend it on someone we know will come in and play well, like Blalock. Offering a big contract to a guy like Huff is a risky proposition.
There's always some risk involved with any player. Any given guy could suffer a career-ending injury at any time. But no risk, no reward, right?
yes, but lets say a player has a career ending injury, the Vikings aren't on the hook for cap penalties by cutting him.

Int he end, cap penalties all depend on the player and contract tied to him. It's different in every case.

I would love to see some of these additions, I just don't see it happening.

Combination of FA rules, money available, money we're willing to spend in a rebuilding period and the importance of developing rooks vs. vets, waht we seem to deem more important.

    However, I'll play. My roster:

    QB:
    Hasselbeck
    Ponder
    Webb

    RB:
    Peterson
    Gerhart
    Booker

    FB: Sauce

    TE: Shank
    Rudolph
    Dugan

    OL:
    McKinnie
    Hutch
    Carl Nicks (NO)
    Loadholt
Matt Light (if he'll come cheap, otherwise Alex Barron)

    Cook
    Degeare
    Sullivan
    Love

    WR:
Rice (Braylon Edwards if Rice won't come back)
    Harvin
Randy Moss (Cox said dream FA right?)
    Berrian
    Camarillo

    DL
    Allen
    Kevin
    Pat
Griffen (In this dream, Griffen will be a good looking young starter, and in a dream inside of a dream, we got a 1st for Edwards)

    Guion
    Robison
    Ballard
    Kennedy
    Reed

    DB:

    Winfield
    Abdullah
    Dawan Landry
    Griffen

    Cook
    Allen
    Burton
    Raymond
    TJohnson
    Sanford

    LB:
    Greenway
    EJ
    Simms

    Erin
    Brinkley
    Onatalu
    Farwell

    ST:
    Longwell
    Kluwe
    Loeffler

    Total: 53
I love the Carl Nicks idea. The guy's picture is next to Hutch's in the dictionary under the definition of nasty. IMO he would be a great addition to this team.

Nicks would struggle at C. Its a great idea but I don't see him playing center because New Orleans already has a below average C and they would've converted him had they seen something.

I wouldnt mind seeing him at RG if Hererra's knee is of any concern. But as some have already said, we probably cant make that one happen.
