Getting smith and berrian would be so huge, because it does not put such a strain on our needs when it comes to the draft.
We can hopefully go best player available no matter what if this FA stuff works out.
Or possible take that 3rd rounder that the Texans have not gotten yet and our extra 4th or something and try to move up a few spots in the draft and get kenny phillips!
OH THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS AND WAY TO EXCITING!!!
there is no BPA when you draft as late as we do..top 10 is where you take BPA
I disagree... people get upset when we offer a 3rd round pick for a player how is #17 to far out to draft BPA.
Moss was not in the top 10 when we took him... I can think of a lot of examples, but I am too excited to argue and to tired to think of them.
Bottom line about what I said, is I like what we are attempting to do in FA... and I hope that it helps to not force our hand when it comes to the draft.

    Re: Justin SMith to Visit

well the only sad thing is that we are probably gonna have to pay alot of money for these guys, but i dont think the organization and definitely fans should think these 2 guys are saviors (if we get them).

smith is a good motor guy and if we can get a return outta him like the seahawks got from kearney we will be ecstatic, but he is coming off a 2 sack year and hes' never been considered reggie white so all we;re doing is adding a solid starter to replace udeze in all reality.

and as i said in another thread berrian isn't really the full package, but he's gonna provide us with a legimate deep threat who catches the ball more frequently than never(twill).
this is something we've lacked since moss was sent packing, so he may not catch 100 balls for 1400 yards but he's gonna bring us a demention we haven't had.

filling any other holes through free agency would just be an added bonus heading into the draft.
if we added a safety, fullback, and a solid back qb, i might just cream in my pants.
but like a couple of others said, i dont wanna get to excited just yet

I don't see why we are so excited about a guy coming off a 2 sack season.
Personally I would rather see us address this position through the draft and maybe hire a pass rush specialist like Kearse to come in and play passing downs.
Smith is going to want a long-term deal, and a lucrative one at that.
Kearse could probably had for a 2 year deal and less money.
Rock out with your cock out!!!

OK, I'm asking an honest question here, for those of you concerned about the high cost of free agency:

How is overpaying free agents any worse than overpaying first round draft picks?

    I'm only asking.

As a corollary question: Which would you rather take a chance on overpaying, an unproven rookie or a veteran with a proven track record?

I'm not against overpaying for an impact guy.
But when you give out horribly big contracts to guys like Berrian I just don't see it.
I'd rather spend the money elsewhere.

i think that its just the times.
becuz of what other posters have stated with guys getting locked up or franchised you can't overpay high tier free agents, you have to overpay for guys who will fill a void you have and make other players better.
that is the hope we should have with a berrian if we get him.
that he makes a guy like rice, who may have more of the all around tools to be a number one, to become the number 1.

You're no doubt right that the contract will be massive. We don't know for sure until its signed, of course, but it seems pretty likely to be a monster. However, Berrian was 49 yards short of a 1000 yard season. On the Bears.

Let me repeat that: 951 yards with Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton as quarterbacks.

Now, you say you're not against spending big bucks on an impact guy. Well, bare with me for a second. Besides the potential impact of a 1000 yard season that he himself could have, consider the impact Berrian might have on our running game. I honestly believe that with Berrian and Rice as primary receivers, defenses will have to respect our passing game considerably more than they did last year. That will make it a lot more difficult to stack the box against the Vikes' ground game. And we all know what can happen when Adrian runs against seven in the box instead of eight or nine. As far as I'm concerned, that is a hefty "impact" in and of itself, in addition to whatever kind of numbers Berrian actually puts up in the passing game.

Edit: Oh, right. This was a thread about Justin Smith, oops!
    :-[
Regardless, my original questions still stand. Is it more worth it to overpay a known factor such as Justin Smith or take a chance on overpaying a 1st or 2nd rounder who may be a complete flop?

I guess it's just my philosophy that you should overpay FA's to fill blatant needs and draft for depth (but hope that some of those draft picks end up starting right away). To me, WR, DE, and S are blatant needs. I don't expect all of those to be filled by FA, but filling one or two would go a long way in helping to build for depth and longevity.

justin smith isnt even a sure thing to make it to winter park

from espn "The Vikings and 49ers battled it out to convince Bengals defensive end Justin Smith, but Smith informed the 49ers he will make San Francisco his first stop."

We're gonna have to overpay for Bernard there is no running from that. The upside is he's only 27 or 28 and he has improved every year of his carear. Not to mention being on the bears, our offense is much better especailly with Peterson. With Bernards speed and ability he could be the missing link in getting things going. If we don't make a move here we end up drafting a young guy that sees the feild rarely next season. Rice, Berian and Wade make nice trio with a guy like Allison developing.

As far as Smith goes i'm realy exited there going after him, like Bernard he's at a good age especailly for a Dlineman, with a nice new contract and good team to play on Smith should do real well. He's been productive and hasn't missed any games, durable and productive gotta like it. We need a veteran DE just like we need a verteran WR.

If we could find a way to get Meudia Williams and Tapeh the draft could be all about value.
