    Jags trade partially vindicates Vikings

    Interesting take

    http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/04/27/jags-trade-partially-vindicates-vikings/

When the Jacksonville Jaguars shot up from No. 26 to No. 8 in the first round of the 2008 draft in order to land defensive end Derrick Harvey, an obvious question arose.

Why didn’t the Jags simply do the same deal with the Chiefs for Jared Allen?

To get Allen, the Vikings invested a first-round pick and two third-rounders.
They also flip-flopped picks with the Chiefs in round six, a drop of five spots.

To get Harvey, the Jags invested a first-round pick and two third-rounders.
    And a fourth-rounder.

Allen didn't want to go there. Probally the biggest issue. Also the 8th pick wouldn't be paid as much and doesn't have a DUI problem. Not saying it was the best move but there are some reasons why they may have gones this route.

I don't really think it would matter if Allen would've wanted to go there...the Chiefs controlled the trade, not Allen

They definitely overpaid for an overhyped Harvey. I know a lot of people were hoping we would get him (before the Allen trade of course) but I think he is a athletic freak that will not perform quite as well in game time.
I cannot see why the Jaguars went this route to get him, but they obviously like him ... and to each their own. I am not going to judge. Del Rio seems to know what he is doing most of the time, but this one could have been a reach.

Allen had to sign with them so it was up to him

moving up in the draft is always costly. but the thing with the jags is that they think they are close to winning that division and potentially going on a run. what did they need the most from the draft? a pass rusher. yes, as a whole they probably overpaid, but for themselves, it was probably the right price seeing as they could not get allen and taylor doesnt look to be moving

No team would trade for him if he was unwilling to sign an extension.
