While doing my off-season preparation for Fantasy Football, I look over a ton of statistics. I normalize the data so I can compare teams with respect to averages and ratios and not absolute total numbers to get a feel for how good/bad a team really is in certain categories.
I thought you guys/gals might be interested in some of the rankings for the Vikings. I only pulled out the "Poor ranking" or "Areas for improvement".
OFF - Rush Yards/Carry
OFF - Percent Negative Rush
OFF - Oline - QB Hit %
ST - Kick-off Touchbacks
ST - Opponents KO Return
ST - Punting Net
ST - Punt Ratio TB/Down-20
DEF - Opponents Pass compl%
DEF - Opponents Yards/pass att
DEF - Opponents Pass 20+ yards
DEF - Opponents Pass Rating
DEF - Pass Defended
DEF - Pass Int%
While I realized we needed to improve our OL/Rushing attack, I did not realize we had such a high ratio of rushes for a loss (Only Detroit was worse).
It looks like we have Lloyd Rhys to help the Kick-off situation.
What are the chance we replace Kluwe thru the draft. He really had troubles pinning teams inside the 20? Really was just as bad as KOs.
I knew our Pass Defense was bad, I just did not realize it was this bad.
We really gave up a ton of "Big Plays" of 20+ yards. This really does not look good for our safeties.
Anyway, just thought you guys might be interested.
I'm not a big stat. guy. I leave that to JMcdon and NP.
Most of what the stat rankings show here are things that are pretty evident and obvious.
I know Marrdro has been harping on Kluwe's lack of desire, or inability to hang the ball high, to allow the coverage to get down field, rather than constantly kicking it in the end zone for a touchback.
He has done a little better on his directional punts.
I much prefer Punt Ratio TB/Down-20 to average yards per punt.
Evidently Kluwe doesn't.
Some of us here have been disappointed with the low percentage of touchbacks on kick off, and high percentage of line drives.
Two years ago Longwell found a little early season distance with a new stroke and resting thru training camp.
Didn't work so well last year.
The safety play was poor, but there is more to that story.
Winfield was injured and we played backups and a rookie at corner.
Tackling was poor at times.
And even more important, there were games where the pass rush was on vacation.Stop Jared Allen, and nobody else stepped up.
Just think how bad our secondary would have been without a pretty decent pass rush most of the time.
The rushing woes were primarily a function of a line that was ok in pass blocking duties but not capable of opening many holes in run blocking.
They seemed to be better run blockers the year before.
I wonder if the stats were better the year before?
The 15 rank for kickoff return shows improved special teams coverage I would assume. I can live with a 15 rank. Is that yardage/return?
All in all, a very good post. I enjoyed it.
