Re: Good Bye Fred Smoot NFL Network Reports smoot is done in minnesota

I have no problem with smoot being cut or traded. The only thing I ask is that Childress looks at a cornerback in the 4th-5th rounds of the draft. The great thing about this move is that Frazier must see some good things out of Devonte Edwards and Ced Griffin being the secondary specialist that he is.

Frasier just came in. I doubt he's seen very much if anything on Edwards. Edwards was injured all season & I doubt if he's had a chance to watch a lot of game film on Cedric Griffin.

I'd take Smoot over Ronyell Whitaker any day of the week.

This is kind of a dumb financial move. It would have been better to keep him around for one more year. Here's a piece of an article that was in the Pioneer Press back in November:

If the team cannot trade him, the salary cap hit for releasing him is minimal. Unlike most teams, the Vikings give most of their highest-paid players a roster bonus and opt not to spread out a signing bonus over the length of the deal. Because Smoot's deal included a $6.8 million roster bonus, the most his signing bonus could be is $4 million. Because he has played two seasons, the maximum cap hit would be around $2.66 million.

Good job Ziggy. Take out the last of the garbage. Smoot has been nothing but a HEADACHE since he has been here. Whoever said Champ Bailey made Smoot was right. The guy lacks ANY type of quality leadership.

    But that's my opinion. ;D

I can't say that I am surprised, nor sad about this news.. Smoot has been somewhat of a bust since coming here from Washington.. I was excited when we first signed him, but after all that has gone down in the past couple of years, it is probably better off for him, and the Vikings to part company.. I will not be sad to see him go, I just wish we could have at least gotten a late round draft pick for him..

100% Agree RK. Smoot did just fine in the backfield as nickel after the first few bad games when his tackling was poor.

You will find very few here who will admit it, but Winfield gave up a lot of passes this year & on critical 3rd downs. The film doesn't lie. He made a lot of tackles after the catches with not much YAC's, but a lot of those catches resulted in the chains still getting moved.

    I'm not sorry he's gone.

His mouth and paycheck didn't come close to his playmaking.
I agree that he rebounded some, but still not worth the money.

Winfield keeps his mouth shut for the most part and is an exceptional tackler, but I said it earlier in the season . . . we need two shut down corners.
Our secondary got torched . . . which made our run "D" look better than it was.

To be quite honest Smoot was garbage. He lacked ability to cover WR's we couldn't have traded him if we wanted too. They don't make draft pics that high.

I've watched all the games since Smoot has been with the Vikings and he's been very unimpressive. This year was worse than the year before. He lacks serious intincts, he constintly played the deep ball and was burned time and again, his tackling was very poor, he was definitly not expected to make any big hits or be physical at all. I believe Smoot fits more of a man coverage scheme where you use one on one coverage and GET pressure. They did it in Washington when he was there and he benifited from the scheme. He will find somewhere else to play, his history with the team was not cool.

Last year people worried about loosing chavous all i wanted was someone physical. Dwight Smith played great for us. Cedric Grifin will fill his shoes and much more. We are better off with Gordon as our nickle and thats if we don't draft a guy.

The Winfield comment is crazy if you ask me, this past year was probably his best as a pro. He didn't always shine mainly because of the piss poor pass rush produced by our front four. We had the #7 ranked defense in the NFL. Last or close to it in passing yards, why? Because our pass rush was garbo, Udeze went all 16 games without a sack. But when the opposing team made it to the redzone they couldn't do sh*t on our secondary.

You could reverse this and say thats the reason Smoot played poor, this would make sense but if go back to FILM watch smoot try to backpedal, constanty loose footing and serious fear of getting beat deep, practicly playing scared. Thanks to Steve Smith and the NFL Network.

I would like the see the film on Winfield getting burned, all the aclaimed first downs he gave up. Napolean Harris got the worst of it. Being the MLB in the Tampa 2 he must play deep, when there's no pressure from the front things really open up in the middle. At the beging of the year Del Rio empasized getting PRESURE when using this scheme. We didn't get it done with the front four.

Had we kept Brian Williams who fits this scheme we would be looking at BWill-Winfield-Grifith. Thats a nice set of CB's. We drafted him he developed then we let him go.

I agree with everything but the last sentence. B. Williams is good but not 47mil contract worth of good. They can keep him. I'll take Hutchinson.
