    Drafting a DE again!

Now I understand that the Vikes are in need of a DE; not only because erasmus james has been injured and that Udeze has leukemia, but also because the Vikes let the key DE free agents in FA get away.
Im just not sure that drafting a DE that late in the first round is worth it.
I mean the last couple of times we drafted a DE it has not worked out.
Also if Derrick Harvey is gone by the 17th pick I dont think its worth it.
I dont think Philip Merling is worth it.
He is an exact copy of Udeze, good at the run, but poor as a pass rusher.
If we are going to just draft another anemic pass rusher whats the point.
I would rather see some depth at offensive tackle or quarterback.
I would like to see the vikes either trade up to get a good DE or take a solid offensive tackle at the 17th, or possibly trade down to take Joe Flacco or Andre Woodson.
What are peoples of the Purple world thinking?

I'm not entirely sold on Merling, either.
Is our need at LDE really THAT big (and permanent)?
I'm not sure, but we'll probably be drafting a DE with our first pick (assuming we don't trade that pick away for Peppers ) - we're way too thin as it is.

Everyone is concerned about replacing Udeze, but I'm more concerned with finding a RDE who can actually generate a pass rush.

I'd love to get Derric Harvey, but it seems like there is a lot of interest by teams who pick higher than us.

I agree. I would prefer trading for a pass rusher so we have a better idea what we will be getting.
If they think Harvey will be there at 17, then I'm in favor of taking him.
But knowing the history of this team under its current management; I would not be surprised if they are satisfied with Edwards/Robison on the right and draft a later round replacement on the left, or possibly bring in a journeyman to replace Kenechi.

They seem to place a lot of stock in expectations of future improvement for a lot of their young players.
Unfortunately we don't always see that expectant potential realized. eg. Schiancoe.

The same might be said for the WCO/KAO. Which I pray does not become the SOS offense again next year.

I don't like the idea of drafting a backup QB with our first round pick. Someone like Ainge or O'Connell in the 3rd or 4th would be just fine. I bet if we draft someone like Brohm this year, we are going to be in the same position as the Browns are in now.. (and yes, I do think Jackson has a chance of going to the pro bowl this year)

But back on topic, I really hope Harvey falls to us, I don't
think any of the other DEs are worth the 17th pick. If I remember correctly, Merling only could do 17 bench reps at the combine, that doesn't sound like a run-stopping end to me..

I don't really think we need all of our picks this year, since we signed so many free agents, so hopefully we will either trade for a good end (not mentioning any names), or trade up to get Long or Gholston if one of them slips a little. I'm starting to think that might be the FO's plan, it would explain all the free agents we have signed lately, they've filled almost every hole except for DE and QB.

    Re: Drafting a DE again!

We should go DE in the first round. I would love to see what Roison can do as a starter. I actually really like Ray Edwards. But is he a starter? Maybe. I would like to see us scoop up either Long, Gholsten, or Harvey. If we can't get those guys I would not be against drafting a OL. QB is not an option for me in the 1st round. I would like to see us get Henne in the 3rd. Definitly a DE or OL in the 1st.

    Easy there, he is new.

We have numerous threads discussing our DE situation.
