Dont't take a DE first round!!!
We dont need a Defensive end this first round. With the great depth in this years draft i don't think we should take a D end in the 1st. Theres enough depths in this years draft to pick up one nearly as good in the second. We could use our first for another great need.
Or we could instead get DT Alan Branch who ran a sub 5.1. So he could play D end and then move him in when Pat is gone since he is 31.
List of good DE in the draft:
Top 5
1.Gaines Adams
2.Jarvin Moss
3.Adam Carriker
4.Jamal Anderson
5. Anthony Spenser
All around the same skill level and then theres other who are near there skill level
Ouintin Moss
Victor Vineteri
LaMar Woodley
Plenty of these guys will survive past the 1st to be taken by the Vikes 2nd.

If you want the cream of the crop and want a DE, that can come right in and be an impact player and start, you will almost have to take one in the first round....I don't see it being that deep with impact type players..
I personaly only see two, the rest will be hidden jems if you can find one.
Gaines Adams
and
Jamal Anderson
These two would be worthy of a 7 slot pick if you ask me....I really like the Adams kid and think he is going to be a very good NFL DE..
Both will be gone by the 12th pick....

Re: Dont't take a DE first round!!!
Personally I think that DE is not are main priority. Especially when we can go after guys like Dewayne White from the Bucs and we already have Darrion Scott. I think we have bigger needs like WR and QB to address in the 1st and 2nd round. However next year it would make perfect sense to pick up a DT for Pat Williams is getting old and that is the last year of his contract.

Re: Dont't take a DE first round!!!
Between Erasmus, Udeze, and Ray Edwards, we will be fine at DE. There is room for improvement but hopefully Udeze and Edwards can combine on one side and Erasmus will come back healthy foru our main pass rushing threat.
I told you all letting Lance Johnstone walk was stupid!"I hate when threads are destroyed by facts and logic."

Don't know about this, 16 tackles and 2 sacks last year. Of course, that's 2 more sacks than Udeze. I believe we need a QB or DE in the first in that order. Not sold on TJ, and for DE's who knows what James will be like coming back from another injury and I believe we can upgrade Edwards. Good thing there are are few really good DE's in this draft.Between Erasmus, Udeze, and Ray Edwards, we will be fine at DE. Re: Dont't take a DE first round!!!
I think (for whatever that's worth), for now all we need is a designated pass rusher. A younger Lance Johnstone.
Maybe that will buy some time until Udeze comes around. He IS a first rounder and it DOES suck to give up on that kind of investment.
But, if they did draft a DE, I wouldn't mind.

Re: Dont't take a DE first round!!!
Gaines Adams in on my short list of people who I think would warrant a #7 pick for the Vikings.
The others on that list at CJ, Thomas, and possibly Quinn.
If any of the are available at #7 I say we take them, otherwise trade down.
You are right when you say that DE is simply not a great need for us.
But with a top ten pick, you have to look both at team needs, as well as the skill set of the players available.
If we did draft Adams, not only would it give us a kick jiggly butt pass rush this year, but we would have very good depth in case of injury (last two years mean anything?).
Any we would have excellent trade fodder in the offseason.
I am with PPE.
Not my very first choice, but if they drafted him I wouldn't be upset!Zeus wrote:

Re: Dont't take a DE first round!!!
The arguement of needing a DE or not needing a DE should be looked at both ways,
We lost Erasmus which obviously hurt our pass rushing skills and udeze didnt step up at all either.
So when you look at it this way people would think we need a DE for sure.
One thing to consider would be how good our defense would of been with James playing, Udeze would of gotten plenty of sacks with James being healthy, you cant double team James and both the williams bro's all at the same time.
And if ya did then Udeze would of eaten qb's for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
It is tough to say if we need to draft a DE with our 7th pick.

Re: Dont't take a DE first round!!!
If, as expected, Calvin Johnson is gone by #7 and we don't trade up to select him then we need to move back in the draft an acquire a few extra picks and draft Dwayne Jarret or Robert Meachem.
I'm comfortable with our DEs right now, and there are a lot of talented DEs that will be available in Round two.
I think we need to come out of the first round with a WR (especially since we don't seem to be signing any).
I like Gaines Adams, though, and wouldn't scoff at the pick, I just wouldn't be terribly excited about it.When it s all said and done, you ll have to admit we re number 1!

Re: Dont't take a DE first round!!!
Well I look at it a couple differnt ways.
First off we all know how terrible our pass rush was.But why? I myself dont know for sure, but I do know a couple reasons that could be answers.
Having both Udeze and Scott out there in a way hurt us, and in a way helped us.We had 2 run stopping DEs trying to pass rush. And it just didnt work.I'd see our D-line be off bye a mila-second and just miss the QB.I saw it happen, over and over again this past season.
Our answer to our problem really relies on one man.Erasmus James.
In the cover 2, it is essential that you get pressure on the QB.Most cover 2 teams have smaller DE's who are more fast.Erasmus fits this mold very well.If any of you remeber earlier in the offseason.Udeze and James spoke with Strahan.Strahan told them a certain weight he felt was perfect at that position.Udeze slimed down and tried to get to that weight. But see what I think is, is that Udeze is a run stopper, and thats about it.We had two Scott's on the field, or two Udeze's.We had no pass rush specialist besides our rookie Edwards.
So IMO if James comes back, and dosnt look to sharp. We're in deep...deep poop. We'd have the same lineup as last year, and that is far from what we all want.
However if he comes back and is healthy, I think we could easily see a resurgance in our D-line.I think we'd see alot better play from Udeze as well.
So you see if our coaches our confident James is the man for the job, we should be ok.However if James struggles, we'll need alot of help.
So this is where the draft comes in.
Do we go out and draft a player that seems like an immediate impact player at that positon?Yes.
I think our number 7 pick is perfect for a DE.Anderson and Adams are pash rushing monsters, and would help us right away.
Alot of people say we have other areas we need to work on, and that is true. But when your pass rush is as bad as ours was, that area DOES need help.Something obviously wasnt clicking.A fresh new face could help that.
Theres NOTHING greater then a Florida Gator!
