Don't Be Suprised If Locker is Vikings Man at 12

The Minnesota Vikings like Jake Locker. His makeup has yielded comparisons internally to the Noodle

And while it's too soon to peg Locker's spot on the Vikings' draft board -- team officials begin nine consecutive days of draft meetings on Monday -- there is a growing sense around the NFL they're preparing to pounce on the Washington quarterback at No. 12 overall.

"He doesn't have the Noodles arm talent," said an executive in personnel for another NFC team. "But of this group of quarterbacks, if we were going to a park and go play, you'd pick the Noodel and you'd probably pick this guy (Locker). He's such a tough-ass football player."
That doesn't mean accuracy -- particularly within the pocket -- is a nonissue for Locker, who completed only 53.9% of his passes over four college seasons and threw 35 interceptions against 53 touchdown passes. (Incidentally, the Noodle completed 52.4% of his passes at Southern Mississippi with 34 interceptions and 52 touchdowns.)
One popular theory suggests the Vikings -- who have conducted private workouts with several quarterbacks, including Locker on March 15 -- might trade back from No. 12 and take Locker later in the first round. That'd be one way to recoup the third-round pick vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman has said he wants to recoup from the Randy Moss debacle.

However, after watching Locker's "lights-out" campus workout last month, one NFC decision-maker speculated he could go as high as No. 8 to Tennessee. The Washington Redskins, who want to replace Donovan McNabb, are another possibility at No. 10.
Spielman acknowledged on Sunday that the odds of hitting on a rookie quarterback plummet significantly after the first round. But he reiterated that reaching for a quarterback "could set your organization back" and said the team has identified "12 or 13 blue chip-type players, which is more than normally out of any other draft."

The Vikings' process over the next nine days will include narrowing a field of seven or eight quarterbacks to perhaps as few as two, Spielman said -- then figuring out what needs to be done to land one of them.

"I think it's a deep quarterback class," Spielman said. "I think you'll be able to get some players even through your second and third rounds. But each of them have a hole or a flaw in them, and you've just got to try to make the right decision on what's going to best fit for your organization, what's going to best fit for your offensive system."

More and more this is the direction I hope we go here.

I just stated in another thread, if the front office thinks this is THEIR GUY ... then they have to take him here. No choice.

Agreed. Passing on anybody they really like just because of perceived values that other teams/analysts put on him is the stupidest move they could possibly make.

If they truly feel he's the right pick, take him. If he busts, then whatever, but better than passing and he turns out to be the guy to save our team.

I think I would be pretty happy with one of 4 at 12, in this order....

    1. Gabbert
    2. Newton
    3. Locker
    4. Mallet

at 43, even though I don't think any of them are gonna be there, I would be happy with the other "Projected" franchise guys....

    1. Kaep
    2. Stanzi
    3. Ponder
    4. Dalton

If we land one of the top 4, I want him to start. As much as I hate to see Rookies on the field, let alone under C, I think all 4 need one year of reps to accelerate that maturation process.

If we go with someone at 43, I still wouldn't be to upset to see them under center but I hope they bring in someone other than Bomar and not so he can teach the rook. Someone that can run the offense. Guys I hope they are looking at as hard as they are the rooks.....

    1. Matt Moore. I think the jury is out on this kid. My guess, you get him on a team were the owner hasn't gutted the roster and the coaching staff and you might get some more production out of him.

    2. Alex Smith. Honestly, I'm not so sure the 49rs are done with him, but I think he, along with Moore could be better under a coaching staff that doesn't change every other year.

    3. Marc Bulger. Now I'm getting into the old, bandaid guys that will only get you a year or two. Fits the scheme. Has been both a start and a backup with no issues. Just not sure what he has left.

    4. Bruce Gradkowski. This guy is alot like TJ. Up one day, down the next. If push comes to shove and they are looking at him, I would rather see them bring TJ back.

If we are going to trade for a guy, I hope they only trade for Kolb. Most because I believe he is a long term solution that would transition to the scheme with very little change from what he did at the Iggles.

That, my friends, is going to be a big issue this year what with the shortened times they will have to get the teams ready.

    In short, in priority order......

    1. Kolb
    2. Gabbert
    3. Newton
    4. Locker
    5. Mallet
    6. Matt Moore
    7. Alex Smith
Everyone else, really doesn't matter wha order.

Not sure if this has been posted. It is a long article where you have to ignore all the awards Locker was awarded or in contention for as fluff.
But the more I look into Locker the less I think he is the guy.

Want to know about Locker? Check out this article.

Thanks Doc, one I hadn't read yet. I actually read all the award stuff. Found some nuggets in there like these....

Locker started the first four games of the season before suffering a broken right thumb while trying to register a block vs. Stanford. In the Huskies' second game of the season vs. Brigham Young
Most on here loved it when the Noodle was doing this kindof thing. I, on the other hand, don't want the QB throwing blocks for this very reason.

Love the tenacity that comes with that attitude though.

Willingham was fired at season’s end and replace with Southern California assistant coach Steve Sarkisian
Willingham. Isn't that the dude that messed up Notre Dame?

with a decisive 42-10 victory over 19th-ranked California, chants of "one more year, one more year," could already be heard echoing throughout Husky Stadium.

The sound was UW fans pleading with Locker to return for his senior season
Fans seemed to like the guy I guess.

On a side note, you read the comments section of the article. Loved the "Your Mom" and "Your Dad" posts.

I can live with that. Next question, you knew there was gonna be one......How do you have them coming off the board.

    1. Carolina - Gabbert. Might chance this to Newton if the rumors persist/get stronger.

    3. Buffaloo - Newton. For some reason I'm locked onto what the HC has taken as a QB before and can't help but think what that town would do with dynamic kid like that under Center. If it works out it would revitalize what was once a great fanbase.

    4. Cincinnati - Not buying into the Carson retirement. No QB taken.

    5. Arizona - I think they are going to be in the Kolb sweepstakes. Coach will be on the hotseat this year if he goes with another young QB.

    7. San Francisco - I can't help but think they will try it with Smith one more time or will they opt for a McNabb (trade a pick) or one of the other FA's (No pick required).

    8. Tennessee - Here is the sticky wickett. If our guy (whoever the staff likes) can get by here, we should get him. Johnson was beyyyatching alot about QB play last year. If he has the owners ear, we might see them try for a Kolb or McNabb kindof guy.

I've even heard some stuff on a Titan chat page were they think the owner likes Kaepernick this high. I, for one, think thats just some yutz talking but don't think it is out of the question to see them target him in the second like I have in my mock.

    12. Vikings - Of course I think its Locker. Mallet could be the guy. I will say Locker here.

    15. Miami - Andrew Dalton goes here, possibly Mallet. Regardless, they will take a QB at 15 or with thier second pick. Alot of stuff out there on the boards about how much both they and Seattle like Locker.

    25. Seattle - Christian Ponder - Again, like everyone, Mallet might be the guy here but I think you have to look at what Whitehurst can do to determine what kindof of QB Pete likes.

Not a speedster, he can and will move around if necessary. Has a big arm but isn't very accurate deep. Has since upgraded his throwing motion so he can get rid of it quicker for the shorter passing game Carrol likes.

In short, if you take Ponder, have him upgrade his throwing motion (described as lazy by most scouts) you have Whitehurst. Additionally, to track with your rankings, I wouldn't be suprised to see them go Stanzi or Kaep here either.
