Re: Donovan McNabb to Minnesota Vikings? It makes sense

If the lockout extends a little longer than most would hope, then the chances of us bringing in McNabb exponentially go up.

If not ... I think that this organization clearly plans on Ponder starting on day one ... and I am not against that really.

There is NO CHANCE that we trade for Kolb or Orton or any three or four year starter at this point.

I would say that McNabb is a FA as soon as he is allowed to be because the Skins will cut him immediately.

So, McNabb and Hasselbeck are the only really possibilities at this point ... but I think they are planning on starting Ponder from the get go.

Re: Donovan McNabb to Minnesota Vikings? It makes sense

McNabb is not coming here, We just drafted our future QB and there is no way he signs with a team whose crowd will be calling for him to be benched in favor of the rookie the first time he throws an INT or has a bad game.

Interestingly on KFAN this AM they were talking about the offense and that it would not be the traditional WCO and that McNabb would have to adapt to different terminology than he had in Philly much like Brett had to do when he went to the Jets and that that learning curve would not be attractive to him.

    Big difference.

Typically a guy at 12 MAY and I mean may start. We reached big time to sign him at the spot we did & everyone knows he was more of a late 1st to mid 2nd. Hell, some had him not going to the 4-5th.

Especially given the circumstances? Are you insane?

Given the circumstances, with what he has to learn & the not knowing if we will even be having much of an offseason program (minicamp, OTA's,TC, etc) there's not much time for preparing that we know of.

Do you honestly believe the Vikings will pass up signing a FA QB & gamble on the fact that they can get Ponder ready?

I don't. What happens if they get thru camp & decide he's not ready after all? A little late to start looking for a FA QB to start at that point. There'll be shit left.

Webb would be the closest thing we have to a starter familiar with the system & we'd be stuck going with him.

You mentioned Bomar, but Bomar hasn't even thrown one pass or taken a snap in a NFL regular season game & he's was drafted in 2009.

Do you think the Vikings would honestly start him?

They'd be stupid, with the whole offseason program up in the air, to not have a veteran on the roster who can start. What veteran presence do you think Ponder would draw/learn from? Webb? Bomar? LOL!

Vikings aren't going to make a trade for McNabb or Kolb & give up valuable future draft picks for a QB for 1 year. Watch for them to target one of the better, but not top FA veteran QB's out there.

Re: Donovan McNabb to Minnesota Vikings? It makes sense

I hope they don't throw him to the wolves day one. Bring in a vet while Ponder learns the game.

I think it is going to be a very long season if we get ponder from day one.

I say if McNabb can be had cheap(say a fourth round pick) they should bring him in. I think it's a real possibility that he thrives with this offense like he did with the eagles. If he struggles, or injuries accur then you bring in ponder midseason, or to finish off a game or two.

I think if you make ponder the guy from day one you are basically throwing away the season, and quite possibly ruining what could be your franchise QB.

    Hope this happens.
I'd rather they go after Carson Palmer.

If that's even an option. The Bengals seem quite adamant about not trading him.

It won't be a big name vet who has a shot at a long term career with another team.

On the PA show on KFAN this AM PA stated he talked to people in the vikins FO and there is zero chance they bring in McNabb.

    I believe it and concur.

Typically a guy drafted in the top 10 or 15 should be someone that can/will provide an immediate impact his first year so yes, I think, under the circumstances, he will start and he will do fine.

And I never said start Bomar. Only thing I've said about Bomar is related to helping Ponder with learning the scheme/how to do things at this level.

Isn't that what all of you keep saying Vets do?

I expect the coaches to coach him up on the scheme and the playbook.

As to the system. Currently, Webb, Bomar and Ponder have spoke with Musgrove and the QB coach. Anyone else coming in would be behind them with respect to our ACTUAL scheme because they are the only ones that the staff has had a chance to talk to because of the CBA thing.

Don't, as our good friend bleed does, mix apples and oranges into what I'm trying to say.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

Yes, because McNabb would be the one teaching Ponder the scheme. You know better, and now you're just arguing for the sake of arguing.

What a guylike McNabb or Hasslebeck brings to the table is experience and ability. They can help teach a kid how to read a D, how to react to certain looks, what to do when X happens.

For example, if we have a guy like McNabb, and Ponder tosses a pick in preseason then goes to the bench to talk it over with McNabb, the exchange won't be

CP "Hey Don, did you see what happened there?"
DNabb"Yeah man, did yous ee how the corners pressed up but you threw the out anyway?"
CP "Yeah, i got rushed there"
DM " well sorry dude, i can't help you, I don't know the name of all the plays yet"

    Nor, would it go

CP " Hey D, you saw when the corner came up on the press right, "
DN "yeah, you shoudl have checked off to Regular, Y left H-peel 949 halfback flat"

No, he'd just say, when the corner comes up on the press, check out into a different play, either one where the Wideout runs a slant, or a fade can also be an option, as if he can get a quick release he'll usually be open for the quick hit.

He doesn't need to understand the ins and outs of the exact scheme we run, most schemes have the same routes and the same plays, just different terminology and way they're used.
