    SHOOTER CHARLEYWALTERS

Word is the hotel and dinner tab to have Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress in town Monday evening to interview for the Vikings' head coaching job was nearly $3,000. Childress, 49, is believed to be the Vikings' top choice to succeed fired Mike Tice.

If the Vikings can outmaneuver the Packers for Childress, he could be announced as coach by Monday. The Vikings say they will pay competitively for the coach they want.

Don't think the Vikings aren't leaning on hall of fame former coach Bud Grant for input during their coaching search.

It wouldn't be surprising if Tice, in order to remain in town for son Nathan's senior year next year at Edina High School, ends up with an NFL network TV analyst job next season, then returns to the league in 2007 as an assistant coach. Tice is perfectly suited for TV; he's direct, opinionated, aggressive, amusing and has contacts throughout the NFL.

Regarding the controversy on the Vikings' news release that Tice had been fired shortly after Sunday's 34-10 victory over the Chicago Bears, Tice first approved the distribution of the press notice.

It will be interesting to see whether Brad Johnson, who quarterbacked the Vikings to seven victories in nine games filling in for Daunte Culpepper, gets his $1 million-a-year contract reworked.

If not, it wouldn't be surprising if the Vikings acquire another quarterback for next season. It seems unlikely that Culpepper's surgically repaired knee will be fully healed in time for the start of next season.
