I need some clarification. Can someone please explain why the bucs would give up 2 first round draft picks for grant. Is there an angle I am missing?

Because he is a beast at DE.

He has great coverage skills and can drop back into a zone defense. He has never missed a game in his 6 year career he has multiple 10+ sack seasons.

He can drop back into a LB slot for zone blitzes.

He is the perfect fit for Tampa Bay. They may have payed too much, but if they did it they must have felt good about it.

yes i doubt they would trade a first round pick and calvin johnson for some help at defensive line!

They wont give up two first round picks for him, But next year if he becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent, Then the Bucs already have a head start on every other team. It is a very crafty move actually. I think they are looking ahead to next year, Simeon Rice is in his last year of his contract this year and I believe next year Grant will be moving to Tampa!

i dont believe it did.
but they are talking about it which is somewhat baffling.
you are right about his talent, but not many players in this league if any are worth 2 1st round picks so the discussions are weird.
and not only a 2 1st picks, but a top 5 pick this year.
doesn't seem feasible

I don't believe you are supposed to use the "Tags" as a means to negotiate trades, but it happens.
Last year the Jets Franchise Tagged Abraham who eventually got 3-way traded to the Falcons.

The Bucs could have brought him in to ignite some trade talks; however, I doubt a trade withing the division would be that amicable.
So the logical reasoning for the visit is to get the early shot at him for next year like gr8tvike said.

yeah but what is the deal with the franchise tag.
dont you have to give up whatever he is deemed.
like could you bargain a deal or is the deal set, 2 first round picks in whatever capacity.
i know they say in some situations when a guy is tagged you have to give up such and such to get him, but is that a starting point for discussion, or the only thing you can give up to get him?
