    CC: Vikings Front Office

Please, do not take much, if any stock, into the combine once it starts.
I know as fans a lot of us get excited for the combine, but it is the most overrated, and overblown hype machine out there.
Too many people take too much stock into it, and players that are fringe, average at best players get moved up in the draft because they can run fast or jump high in shorts.
Give me the player that's busted his ass 3,4 years at the college level and has shown he can play the game.
The hype machine can be a good thing though, if a player we really like dogs it, and would've been a higher draft pick had he blown everyone away, can fall to us.
So please Front office, Speilman, Studwelll, Bald Bafoon, please don't take too much stock into the hype machine, just watch the games from the players to see who is and isn't going to be a star NFL player for us.

    Re: CC: Vikings Front Office

I actually like the combine for a couple of reasons.

It lets me look at the top college prospects (I don't follow college ball much).
It lets me see what a few months of intense training can do to thier numbers.
Did they improve, did they stay the same, can they add weight and mantain/lose speed.
It lets me see them perform in an environment that might make them a bit nervous.

Truth be told, when I work up my mock draft I actually use the following stuff for my final mock.

Because I don't have alot of scouts on my staff, I can't scout everybody so I use a few sites/publications.

    a.
    Ourlads.
I think this is one of the best out there. I actually pay for this one.
    http://www.ourlads.com/
    b.
Value boards. This tells me were they are ranked.
    http://www.nfldraftdog.com/2008_nfl_...alue_board.htm
    c.
Chat sites/player profiles on the web
    http://www.footballsfuture.com/
    d. Combine results.
    e. Medical history research on guys that were hurt.

Long story short, if I am smart enough to know what the combine means with respect to who is or isn't just a workout monster then I am sure the Vikings coaching staff is as well.

Hell, Spielman and company probably have already done the following:

    a.
Ranked the players that have been scouted by Scott Studwells crew and have thier own version of thier top prospects.....
    http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/2008/top100.cfm
    b.
    Thier own value board.
    c.
    Thier team needs
    d.
    Who they will target.
    e.
    What other teams needs are.
    f.
What other teams will be targeting players they like.
    g.
What teams have the players visisted.
    h.
What teams will probably trade up.
    i.
What teams the Vikes could trade up with.
    j.
Medical evaluations of all players targeted or who might be avail at all thier picks.
    k. Budget.
    How much can they spend.

And most importantly, they will have something pretty close to what most of us do and that is they will have several scenarios (we call em mock drafts) crafted so they can come up with thier game plan going into the draft.

I agree with the being able to look at all the college prospects, cause i only follow 2 college teams and when both of them really suck, like they did this year (ND, Gophers) it's hard to pay attention to the players playing
I'm sure some stock can be taken from the combine, but it's just a concern to me that we'll take another Williamson because of combine numbers and whatnot

Not gonna see too many ND or UMN players in the combine this year......

I would think the staff is still leery from the TWill incident, and the last few years have shown some quality drafting, so I'm not too concerned....

    I like the combine.
I watch some of the highly touted draft picks, and I like to watch some of the local boys too (NDSU).

I not only watch it, I watch the re-runs to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I like the combine, but it only measures so much. Bench/track performance doesn't always translate into on the field performance, and vice versa.

I trust our front office enough to see through the hype. They are, after all, professionals at that sort of thing.

Wow... just thinking about last year's draft. Great Draft!

AD, Rice, Robison, Alison, Alexander, McCauley (despite the Washington game)
    Disclaimer: I'm an idiot.
