Broncos | Team will likely gain one or two compensatory picks
Mon, 13 Mar 2006 20:41:57 -0800
Jeff Legwold, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports the Denver Broncos will likely gain one or two compensatory picks for free agent losses from the 2005 season. The Broncos currently have nine draft picks, including two first-round draft choices.

F the Broncos...the Vikings should get some free draft picks just for having to deal with the media bias towards them!

When are you going to realize that picking out the 20 bad throws this year and ignoring the 300 good ones does not make your point?

Re: Broncos | Team will likely gain one or two compensatory pick
I was wondering how they get those draft picks as well. They don't lose any franchise players, or any transition players. What is up with that? I know they have some picks with the trade or something with Washington right? Or I could be wrong...

An older article at nfl.com describes it this way:
Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.
The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced will supplement the 223 choices in the seven rounds of the 2005 NFL Draft (April 23-24). This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.
