    Brian Williams gets transition tag

Darn, dis was already posted in anudder forum, sorry .... ops:

    ===============================================
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings named cornerback Brian Williams as their transition player on Thursday, which prevents him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

By league rules, the Vikings must tender Williams a one-year qualifying offer at the average of the 10 highest-paid players at his position or 120 percent of his 2005 salary -- whichever is greater. Williams will still be allowed to sign an offer sheet with another team, which Minnesota would have a week to match.

The NFL's deadline for designating franchise or transition players was Thursday.

Williams replaced an injured Fred Smoot, one of the Vikings' top free-agent signings last year, and started the last eight games. Williams played well enough to keep his spot when Smoot returned, relegating Smoot to the nickel back role.

A fourth-round draft pick out of North Carolina State in 2002, Williams has started 48 of a possible 66 games in his career. He had 11 passes defended and four interceptions last season.

Lets see what happens... i mean if he's going to be a SS or if Winfield is.. or we will battle Smoot for the starting job.. - maybe this could be a move also to try and inflict Fred Smoot i an C-Pep trade now.. just speculating..

Wonderful! We need the depth at CB...

Anyone wonder if he will be moved to safety?

this is good. hopefully we can get him for this season again. and if smoot has another wonderful year like last, then we know who will be starting opposite of 'toine for the next 4 years.

This is not good see what I posted in the "We may lose BWill thread":

Sean Jensen (beat writer St. Paul Pioneer Press) just stated on KFAN radio that the Vikings used the Transition Tag on him which allows the Vikings to match any offer on him that could pay him an average of the top 10 CB salaries in the league. This is a way for the Vikings to resign Williams cheaply if there is no market for him.

However, Jensen told PA that it is about 99.99% that Williams will not be back with the Vikings because he doesn't want to play for the Vikings anymore and he feels slighted by the Vikings signing Smoot last offseason. Jensen said that even if the money is slightly more here he still sees Williams leaving and he said how can the Vikings justify overpaying to keep Williams with all the money they have tid up in CB already.

its not good if a team throws a lot of money at him, but it gives the vikings an opportunity to keep him here. it does, however, protect us from losing him to an small-average offer if the interest just isnt there. and if green bay is a player for him in FA, i could see us matching the offer and then worrying about who to ship off after. Either way, this was a smart move by the organization.

Sounds like a writer just blowing smoke to me. Who know how he feels now that the team is under new management (new owner, head coach, DC, etc...) I think he realizes that Smoot was brought in under McComb's watch and that things will be different now that we actually have an owner who's committed to the TEAM as a whole. Please stay B Will, we need ya bad!

You are correct but there is always a big market for CBs and he will get a big offer and will not be back, but you are correct if it is a down market for him we can resign or match any offer that is reasonable.

Well, I hope that Childress and him had a nice diner anyways.

Maybe Childress talked him into it. Or might be able to convince him on how he can be a productive member of the Vikings.

He might hold out, he might not.

He might get a better offer, and then we get compensated.

Heck he might even get tagged and buy some time, we get rid of smoot and then we work out a new contract, long term. There are so many things that can happen without getting 99.99% pissy negativo about it like Sean Jean.
