Artis Hicks
By BOB KENT
PhiladelphiaEagles.com profiles the 2005 Eagles, player by player, as we prepare for the 2006 season. Current Profile: OG Artis Hicks.
The Eagles offensive line had some difficulty finding consistency in 2005, thanks in part to injuries which claimed both Hank Fraley and Tra Thomas, both of whom found themselves on injured reserve at one point in the season.
Fortunately, that's where Artis Hicks' versatility came in handy. The team's starting left guard, the four-year veteran slid outside to left tackle when both Thomas and his replacement, rookie Todd Herremans, went down with injuries.
However, Hicks too got nicked up during the year. He suffered an ankle injury in the second half of the team's win over Kansas City on Oct. 2. He was inactive vs. Green Bay (11/27) because of an MCL sprain he suffered in the second quarter of the previous game at New York. Hicks dressed but did not play against the Seahawks on the first Monday in December. In all, he started 14 games in 2005.
While recuperating from his injury he spent time coaching second-year man Adrien Clake, who replaced him for a couple games.
When Herremans suffered a leg injury in the second quarter at St. Louis on Dec. 18, Hicks slid over from left guard to left tackle and played there for the remainder of the game. Subsequently, Hicks was then named the starting left tackle for the last two games of the season.
In the last half of the season he was the second-oldest lineman on the team behind Jon Runyan. The line's inexperience up front showed at times over the final three weeks, as Eagles quarterbacks were sacked 12 times.
As a whole, the offensive line struggled with its pass protection at times, yielding 42 sacks on the year. But when the time came to run the ball the group had some success (both Brian Westbrook and Ryan Moats each posted a 100-yard rushing effort).
Until the 2004 season, Hicks was that invaluable sixth man, able to come off the bench at a moment's notice and fill in if a guard or tackle got nicked up. However, he became the team's starting left guard in 2004 following a season-ending injury to then-rookie Shawn Andrews in the season opener. Hicks found himself as the starting left guard for much of the year, but did make a cameo appearance at left tackle.
Versatile offensive linemen are tough to find, but Hicks has been a pleasant surprise since making the Eagles roster in 2002 as a rookie free agent.
Still, the 6-foot-4, 335-pound Hicks yearns for the day when he can concentrate solely on one position, perfect his technique and footwork.
Hicks is a key cog in the near and long-term future of this offensive line.

Hurry up and trade our 7th for Donnie Edwards if we are making stupid trades like that.

So we got Artis Hicks and Philly's 4th rounder for our 4th rounder?

Re: Artis Hicks aquired from the Eagles
We moved down in the 4th and traded out 6th for a guy that was a starter in Philly. At the least, he'll be a valuable backup on our O-Line. Not bad for a 6th round pick, which usually involves a player with a 50/50 chance of even making the team. Plus, you know this guy is a good character guy, since Childress knows him from Philly. I like this move.
