SAINTS SHOPPING STALLWORTH

A league source tells us that the New Orleans Saints currently are shopping former first-round receiver Donte' Stallworth.

Stallworth was the thirteenth overall selection in the 2002 draft. He is under contract through 2007, with base salaries of $1.92 million and $545,000 in the final seasons of his rookie deal.

The former Tennessee star quietly had his best season in 2005, with 70 catches for 945 yards and seven touchdowns. But he has still fallen far short of the pre-draft hype that surrounded him four years ago.

With Stallworth signed through 2007, a contract extension upon acquiring his rights isn't mandatory. However, before giving up a pick or a player for his services, it would make sense to determine whether Stallworth would be happy with the long-term piece of salary cap pie that a new team might be offering.

If the Saints move Stallworth, they'll have a significant hole to fill in the starting lineup. Chris Horn has been signed in the offseason, but the team surely would have to go back to the free-agent pool (possibly in search of some post-June 1 cuts) or draft a guy who can make the kind of impact right out of the gates that most folks expected of Stallworth's NFL career.

I personally have always liked the guy and feel the Saints have used him incorrectly. He's productive, come cheap, and alot younger a choice than M.Rob or Taylor ....

That would be a dumb move by the Saints...with Brees there, he will maximize the passing opportunities...Stallworth will shine in their new offense. Something must be up!

The Saints are trying to get rid of their second....is there some kind of twist that puts Stallworth into that goal? Seems strange. Stallworth had Haslettitis the past few years, the only coach in the NFL that challenged Tice for most mentally challenged coach in the NFL.

Troy Williamson and Stallworth are out of a similar mold, I dont think we really need to spend our money that way.

That's true of anyone in the draft this year or any other year. Something to keep in mind this year.

As far as Stallworth, he could fit into the scheme of things. With Burley gone, he could fill the roster spot.

And we know what we would be getting.

Dirt cheap. Well worth the risk with only upside IMO.

What would we have to give up to get him? 4th round? maybe more?

I wouldn't want to give up anything more than a 4th rounder for him.... I know he has talent, but I doubt they would be looking to get rid of him if they thought he was going to get much better.

Depends upon the price! If it is a 4th rounder, I agree he would be worth looking at. If it is a 2nd rounder, no way. He would not be certain to start on the Vikes, but as the 4th receiver he would be a great option.
