Who cares, players in later rounds get cut before the season all the time... wouldn't that be a waste of a pick also?

Then i guess Tom Brady, Brad Johnson and Trent Green should have been cut too??
they were all 6th round or later.
Even if there was no one we wanted to take, we could package the 6th with another pick and move up in the 4th or 5th round.

We needed more experience at QB last year.
I don't think it was a dumb move.
    Hindsight is always 20/20.
I think the biggest loss the team faced with the Holcomb pickup wasn't the 6th pick, but the roster spot for Tyler Thigpen.

    I don't think we have 9 picks.
We gave up a 6th last year and got one back from the Twill trade.

    2. Extra 3rd round pick this year came from Spielman (not the Chiller) moving down last year in the draft.

Our picks should look like this for a total of 8.

I believe I am confused. I thought we gave up this years 6th for Holcomb last year.
    Haven't gotten around to checking
on that, however, there is a thread out there that Cogs posted that shows us still having one from somebody else.

My guess is we would have had 3 6ths this year if we wouldn't have given one up for Holcomb last year.
Again, I will do some digging to figure it out.

Re: 9 picks in the draft

Other than the nine picks we already have, we may also get some compensatory picks.
Probably not, but it's a possibility.

Last year the league handed out 32 compensatory picks to 16 teams, including four 3rd round picks and six 4th round picks (at the end of those rounds).
    Compensatory picks cannot be traded.
Compensatory picks are determined sometime in late March based on some mysterious formula the league has that measures the value of free agents acquired against free agents lost.

I believe it is actually measured against the free agent crop from last year, because playing time is taken into account.
So we brought in Wade, Shiancoe, Doss, and Vinny Ciurciu.
None of them started all 16 games, which may or may not be meaningful, but Wade and Shiancoe played in every game.
We lost Whittle, Smoot, Brad Johnson, Napoleon Harris, Bethel Johnson, and Wiggins.
Harris and Smoot are the only ones that saw significant playing time with their new teams.

So it's probably a wash and we get zero.
But we might get a late round pick.

Also - we gave up our 2009 6th round pick to get Holcomb, not this year's (link added).
When the age of the Vikings came to a close, they must have sensed it. Probably, they gathered together one evening, slapped each other on the back and said, "Hey, good job." - Jack Handey [Deep Thoughts]

The 6th rounder could as well not have made the team.
