I just noticed today (Friday night/Saturday morning) that the Vikes released James.

Too bad he couldn't stay healthy.

The Vikings' release of defensive end Erasmus James leaves them with one remaining member from their ill-fated 2005 draft class. By my count, every other team in the league has at least two of its 2005 draft choices. The average is four per team.

That just goes to show you what I mentioned in our 2008 draft grade thread. You really can't grade how well the draft went until 3 years down the road.

Re: 2005 draft worst ever in Vikings history?

    What a shame.
You could make an argument that the 2005 Draft is a bottom five of all-time.
You could also make an argument that CJ Mosley is the best player drafted by the Vikes that year.

    Round 1:
Picks 7 - Troy Williamson...c ould not catch a cold
Pick 18 - Erasmus James...injuri es killed his potential
    Round 2: 17 (49)
    - Marcus Johnson...back up to Ryan Cook
    Round 3: 16 (80) - Dustin Fox...currentl y 4th LCB on the Bills depth chart
    Round 4: 11 (112) - Ciatrik Fason...awful
Round 5: 18 (154)Traded to Washington, along with the 120th pick for the 112th pick in the 4th round.
Round 6: 17 (191) - CJ Mosley...start ing DT for the NY Jets...traded for Brooks Bollinger

    Round 7: 5 (219) - Adrian Ward...huh?

In between the bust Williamson pick and the bust James pick...
    8 - Antrel Rolle, CB
    9 - Carlos Rogers, CB
    10 - Mike Williams, WR
    11 - DeMarcus Ware, DE
    12 - Shawne Merriman, DE
    13 - Jamaal Brown, OT
    14 - Thomas Davis, S/OLB
    15 - Derrick Johnson, LB
    16 - Travis Johnson, DT
    17 - David Pollack, DE

I thought the Vikes should have taken Derrick Johnson or Jamaal Brown with #7 at the time.
Merriman had some character issues, which is why he dropped.
I posted this yesterday in the "Erasmus James Waived" thread.

Jamaal Brown was/is a RT...he would have been the perfect 10-year compliment to Mount McKinnie, and a much safer pick at #7.
Derrick Johnson is a solid OLB...a little bit of a stretch at 7, however, TWill was MUCH more of a reach.

The biggest mistake was thinking there was a good wide receiver, AT ALL.
    Check this out http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?season=2005&round=round1.
Williamson was a stretch, for sure, but, that was an incredibly awful year for the WR position.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent

Now, to not totally dump on the Vikings, they have done an excellent job recently with the 2006 and 2007 drafts. Also, the Vikes were not the only team to bomb the 2005 Draft. Most teams did......

Of the 32 players taken in the first round, I count only 5 who I'd consider worthy of their first round selection.....
